So this morning, there are about 30 new fry to add to the QT tank with a lot of other fry... I was wondering, when is too many fry too many? There is a lot. My mom thinks I made the parent's tank "too happy" 😂

It's too many, when there's more fish than water.

Are you keeping a close eye on the QT water params?

Lol ok

Honestly I havent been... Its been hectic with other stuff but I find time to prepare food and stuff... I will try to test later today... Hopefully the brine shrimp are jot affecting the params too much. The snails eat up leftovers mostly but then the snails poo... Soooo

Just wait til you accidently have a "getting jiggy with it" party involving BN's and/or Cories, then you'll be overfyed and start to think you are seeing things....like...."did that substrate just move?" 😱

...yes it did just move....teeming with juvenile BN's and/or Cories 😲

(I have so far rehomed 35 juvenile BN's, 14 Cories and - reluctantly - both my excessively jiggy male BN's to an almost local LFS.....and my substrate is STILL moving!)

Adding ammonia sources (more fish) + not keeping a close eye on params = not good
Yah, I will test later today when I feed again, which should be fairly soon

I hope by me providing a medley of foods they will hrow quicker and I can sell them off... There are a ton. I think my fry tank can still fit more, but not anymore than two batches added on.

To make a long story short: Yes, it definitely can...! Ammonia, ammonia...

Your problem is not so much how many tiny fry you have. Your problem is that they grow.

I have been breeding fish for some time and am pretty good at at it. Right now I have about 350 offspring spread across 17 tanks, I have another 5 cycled and ready to spread them out pending selling. Mine are all hypancistrus plecos which do not have a lot of babies per spawn.

There is a trick to overstocking and not damaging fish. This is lots of water change, regular vacuuming of uneaten food and monitoring the fish. Too many and they do not grow well. So knowing how to recognize a tank has reached capacity. Too many and they can get sick. Too many and they can crash a tank's parameters or spike ammonia very quickly and wiping them out if you are not on top of things.

You cannot just keep adding more tiny babies and not worrying about what will happen with a bit of time. Bear in mind that the bigger a fish is, the more food it wants and the more it will drive off smaller ones trying to eat it's lunch. The bigger ones may also eat the much smaller ones depending on the species.

Yes I thought about these things. What do I do once I have too many? I seriously cant get more aquariums... That won't happen... And I dont want to kill the fry, that feels wrong. What should I do to more batches that come about?

There are some bigger fry in the QT tank but I have not seen chasing. They are close enough in size to where they should be able to grow up with no issues together except for maybe minimal chasing

Donate to the place you bought them from, or a local shop
