I have a java fern in a ten gallon tank that currently holds no fish. There is no overhead light for the tank. Can the java fern survive on only the sunlight that comes through the window (the tank is not near/under the window but would the light still be affective)?

Yes, it can. I have an office mate wth a betta bowl, and it has peacock moss growing very well with just light from a window. The moss gets lots of nutrients from the betta bowl and grows really well in that small amount of light. You might want to add fish! For comparison, the betta bowl, has a small java fern, and it's not growing but it's not dying, the bowl is just too far from the window for that.

Java fern is easily grown in low light, and it should be moved near a window, keeing in mind amount of light, duration of light as in summer/winter, and heat from sunlight.

So, in other words......no
LOL

I have plants, hair grass & anubia and HC, growing on the windowsill in small bowls with no special attention, no lights, no ferts.

What would it take to put a light, any old light, over the 10 gallon?
