Hi all, I have noticed my Betta seems to hve a black line edging his tail fin (caudal?) and then i noticed a 3mm slit in his tail, like a hole halfway in. So I thought that maybe he has fin rot, so applied the treatment to the tank. This morning the slit had lengthened and come right through the tail, making it look like a ct slit tail. I happened to mention it in my lfs, as there was a betta there identical to my Blaze, and she said not to worry, as th dragons sometimes turn into Crown tails....is this right?his dorsal fin has ct edging, as does his pelvic fin. So I can see how a ct conversion could occur, but seriously is this a possiblity. I would rather know as if he's not ill, I need to stop the treatment, thanks

Can't say much now, I'm in a rush
But a betta doesn't TURN IN to another tail type. It's only a mistake, not a conversion. A picture aleays helps, and unless it's ONLY one slit, I don't think so. But since you say the other tails hav CT traits, we'll see?

It sounds like Fin rot.

Might be worthwhile posting ion the emergency section, Wilder will most likely be able to help you.

What...?

I'm sick, I may have read it wrong, excuse me...

What I MEANT was *ahem* Let's say we got a veiltail... it can't exactly turn into a crowntail. It's only mistaken as a veiltail and turns out to be a crowntail (that's only an example, I don't know how they could be mistaken).

Also, could the slit come from something in the tank, and just got worse?

Hhmmmm, yeh.

The black edging indicates fin-rot more than likely.
Or if not possibly a combtail?

How long did you treat him for? a piccy would be good.

From the pic I've seen of your betta, I really doubt he's a combtail. They do not change tail-types either so that LFS was talking out of their... well you get the idea.

It sounds like finrot - are you sure your tank is cycled properly? Maybe check levels again as bad water can make finrot worse.

ETA: It looks like he had that black edging from when you got him. I think just be firm with water changes and try the med. I treated a betta with finrot with eSHa 2000, and he perked up very quickly

Hi managed to get 2 photois but they may seem blurred

hes a happy boy, and is very interactive with me. bless
but I statred treating for finrot yesterday, about to put todays dose in ( and yes carbon is removed)

Could he have shredded his tail on something in the tank? Bogwood, or slate? That bit at the top looks like tears.. if it is, they'll heal up quickly with good water.

Hope he gets better

there is wood in the tank, and rocks which can be split the way slate is, the rest is real plants. I shall keep an eye on him, but they were worse this morning. I shall keep with the finrot treatment in case for a week and see if it helps

You have a very nice red silver Dragon Super Delta with black edging. I've read comments about turning Combtails into Crowntails but they were talking about breeding it into them over generations by selective breeding. I can't tell by the photo whether he has finrot. Here is a picture of my Dragons and a web site were you can see many different colors and shapes of Betta,s. You can see where some of their colors go out to the end and have a clear , black or other colored edging. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iv6JZ6Lobug&NR=1

It looks like it's over the whole length of the fin? Could possibly be regrowth of combing after having it damaged, or a late developer?

OK this is a photo I took today, I think the "finrot" looks thinner. I am keeping the treatment going to see if it helps.
