Ok I am starting a coldwater tank. Im taking my 5 bettas out tommorow. Ok one is going to my fater's house cause my little brother wanted me to let him have it. The rest will be put in healthy living container. Instead of keeping all my bettas in little tanks can i put one betta in with the new goldfish. The goldfish are gonna be fantails so no worry they will eat them. They will be about the size of a male betta. Im gonna put 2 goldies in. So heres my question can i put one of the female bettas with them? Has anyone tryed. The tank there in now is the same one and has no heater. All the fish seam healthy so i dont think tempature will be an issue. My room is a warm tempature all the time in the 70's. So can i put one in? :D

NO it dont mater what size tank the goldfish is coldwater and the betta is tropical

gsl, I was just asking to see what size of tank she had for her goldfish.

Bettas shouldn't be kept with goldfish as they require high temperatures (preferably 80-82 degrees farenheit) whereas goldfish thrive better in lower temperatures (68-73 degrees farenheit?).

Goldfish also produce alot of waste which may cause high ammonia levels...bad for the betta. Goldfish also need at least 20 gallons for the first..and 10 for each after. So, ideally, you should be having a 30 gallon at LEAST for two fantails.

Fantails grow to around 10 inches in 3 years...in optimal care. Optimal care is what you should be providing so a large tank is a necessity when keeping goldfish.

Also, you asked for help. We answered your questions. Please do not make excuses, etc. If you want the best for your betta and future goldfish...keep them seperate.

Can i ask where you read that. I have been researchin in books and online all week. I think i've been on every site on the net. And everywhere it says that fantails need 10 gallons per fish. Ive even posted about me getting 2 fantails for my 20 gallon on the coldwater section and no one in there sayed it was a problem. I was going to put the betta in there while the goldfish were still about an inch and a half long. Never mind ill just do what i think will be ok.

Ok then why does he say at least 30 gallons. technacally hes wrong.

The answer is No. No matter what size tank you have the answer is no.

#1. They are coldwater fish. Bettas are happiest when kept above 76 degrees. Goldfish do not liek water that warm.

#2. Goldfish produce massive amounts of ammonia..which are the number one cause of finrot and most other ailments of bettas.

#3. Bettas don't usually fare well with other long finned/colorful fish. Goldfish can also be very nippy as well.

Why must you argue with people after you after for their help?

People say 10 gallons per goldfish not becasue of their size but becasue of their waste (ammonia) output. Most goldfish hobbyist will say for 2 goldfish you need 30 gallons. It helps offset the ammonia. 20 is minimum 30 is optimal for the health of your fish.

Jeeze. Don't ask questions when you know you aren't going to, or you know you might not like the answer you will/may get.

Either keep a tropical tank or keep a coldwater tank or keep both..but don't put both together...when you've been told it's bad for both fish.

Oh i see why this is such a big problem. I posted in the betta section. Nevermind i know how you guys get attitudes toward everything.
That statement was uncalled for, but Whatever. Go ahead and put your fish together and kill or make them sick. But don't come back crying about it afterards..asking "why is my betta not thriving, why is my betta so sick, why is my goldfish dead??". When you know the answer to the "why".

You are going to get the same answer from the coldwater hobbyist...that tropicals and coldwaters are not meant to be kept together.

 I cannot fathom why people ask for help then lash out angrily when they don't get the answer they were looking for. Why not just do whatever it is you wanted to do..because that's what is going to happen regardless (if it hasn't already).

*deep sigh* If the truth means being harsh..then yes I am very harsh. And I am proud to be harsh and not all "sweet" and sugar coat things to make them suit your needs/wants.

You don't see why...the "why" is because there have not always been goldfish in the tank with her.
