It seems that a number of my fish have got callamanus worms. I have been looking on the web and the recommended treatment is levamisole, however the only one i can find is to treat birds. I know i'm going to lose fish but i've read that the worms spread through the tank so need to treat to stop the spread and hopefully save as many of my fish as possible. Does anyone know where i can get treatment for the worms, or whether i can use the one for birds if i alter the dose?? I can't believe this is happening, i've never had to deal with any illness this bad before so i'm really worried that it's going to wipe them all out. The affected fish are all bettas, mostly females, however one of my males appears to have them as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When I had a breakout, Nmonks advised that the best place to get it, is from the Vets

You can only get levaimsole from a vet in the uk.

There this med in the uk for camallanous worms.

Hi,

I dealt with camallanus worms in my guppy tank. You need to take obviously infected fish out (as in worms looking like little red paint brushes hanging out of them) because once the worms show up, the fish are too sick to recover. When I treated my tank, I had two guppies in there and both survived initially, then about a week later, I looked into the tank and discovered all the insides of one of my fish had come out. He was still alive and swimming along with internal organs visable. He had to be euthanized. As time has gone on, the other has begun looking terrible. I brought home another one since then treating the tank and he's all plump and healthy. I think even if some of your fish aren't heavily infected, once camallanus HAS been in their system, they're never going to have quite the health as they had previously.

The med. for birds should be fine. Be sure to cover your tank while doing treatment because Levamisole is light sensitive.

Oh, and remember to wash your hand thoroughly after working with each tank. Camallanus is easily spread between tanks by using the same nets, syphons, etc.

My trick is buying Solo plastic beverage cups in 100 packs and after using (if I need to take a fish out or scoop water out of my tank) tossing.

Levaimsole its the best med for camallanous worms. But in the uk levaimsole is only available throw a vet.

Not sure if it's the same in the UK, but here in the US some vets do sell Levamisole w/out an RX. I called around and did find one place. Keep in mind, that was about the 20th place I called and the med is sold as a cattle dewormer and comes in tablet form, so it needs to be crushed up.
