Buying More Cories

i have 1 spotted cory in my tank and before I buy more do they have to be of the same species (putting a spotted with a panda)

It's usually best to have several of the same species of cory before adding more of a different species. C. pandas are especially partial to their own kind and are likely to be overly stressed out without other pandas around them.

That being said, it's fine to keep groups of different kinds of corys together in the same tank.

what would a reasonable group size be?

I'd say three, at the very least. The more you can keep together, the better it is for them.
