ok so a friend of mine has an old 10g tank that he no longer (and hasn't for a while (atleast 5 years)) uses. I now have multi tank syndrom (well I've had it from the start, started with a 29g, 2 weeks later I've got a 20g, followed closely by a 10g quarantine tank, and now this 10g he's got). My question is, how much should I pay him for it? It's a 10g tank with a hob power filter, heater, gravel (don't care for probably will be removed but beside the point), and decorations (same as gravel) I don't know/think a stand will be coming with it, so how much for a 10g tank with everything? It's used (atleast 5-6 years old as he only had it set up for a short time then took it down) and from a friend of mine, I just don't know how much to offer, I don't want to pay much but I don't want to low ball him as he's a friend of mine and wouldn't want a friend of mine trying to low ball me and he has no clue what to ask for it. Any help would be great.

edit: It will also come with a standard hood and light (standard as in one flourecent strip, with low wattage like you'd get on a starter kit)

I'd say no more than $15 since it's so old and unused. I paid $10 for a similar thing at a Flea Market but it lacked a heater and substrate (unless you count dozens of seashells as a substrate).

If it comes with a stand then I would go higher, but to be honest I will tell you what my LFS said when I was looking at used tanks:

$1.00 per gallon if it includes light and stand. $1.5 per gallon if it includes light, stand, and heater/filter. He said not to pay more than that.

I didn't ask without a stand because what I was looking at included the stand. :/

That's hard to find. Most tanks you're lucky to find bare at their gallon size let alone with a stand and lighting. The cheapest I've seen is $10 for a bare 10 gallon tank, everything else quickly goes up and the price to gallon ratio goes out the window faster than the 1 inch per gallon rule.

That is true. But then again... 125 Gallon, stand, 3 filters, 2 heaters, 2 900GPH Power Heads, PCF Lighting (4x96W total), for under $2.50 per gallon. :)

BTW, you can buy a bare 10G for $9.95 at Petsmart, a 10G with hood for $24.95, and a full kit for $49.95.

A whole setup like he's getting would cost at least $45 and probably more with the stand which often sells for $20 on it's own if you can find one cheap.

yeah I think 15 is fair for just the tank and light and filter and heater, with no stand, as I don't really need one here in my dorm (it'll become my quarantine tank and go under the bed) and my 10g now will remain on my desk and become a brackish figure 8 tank, atleast that's the plan (unfortunatly with winter break coming fast I probably won't set up the brackish tank until next semester, as I don't want to get a brackish tank set up and then the second it's set up and cycled have to move it. So I think I'll give him 15 for it. (PS I work(ed) at petsmart and bare 10g were on sale last time I was there for 7.99, regular price is 9.99 though)
