Hi

Me again, haha.

Im looking for more information on Butterfly Loaches, i was at my local shop today asking about them. But they didnt have as much knowledge as i had hoped for about them. They have said they can get them in on there next order if i want one.

Any info would be great, especially if you have had them before and your experiences.

Bit of a "dangerous" common name (as contaminant species can be mixed in), but http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/beaufortia-kweichowensis/ a decent starting point.

Like all "hillstream loaches" the critical points of keeping them are cooler temps (typically ~20C), lots of water movement (~20x real water turnover, not the figures quoted in marketing blurb by some manufacturers) and very clean water (eg. no rotting plant matter or a build up of fish waste).

I'd really recommend a species set up, although they would mix quite well with some of the danios/minnows.

Not a fish for the usual community.

Ok i was very curious as i love the look of them, i was wondering if they would be compatible with Mollies and Tetras. My water is well looked after. Thankyou for the information, its hard to find it on websites as pretty much every website is different... Haha :)

Ah, fishkeeping; there's always someone doing something out of the ordinary and making it work!

I've seen 'Borneo Suckers' in their natural habitat in Malaysian highland. This was one of the rivers they were in, their ACTUAL habitat! As you can see, the water was fast flowing and felt REALLY cold. I spotted them on the rocks, in the current, darting about.

I'd imagine Beaufortia species come from very similar river habitats.

Thank you for that. Nothing better than seeing the actual habitat your fish come from to give you ideas for the perfect conditions for them :)

Could you hazard a guess at the water temp?

Not really, we were in really remote, dense rainforest so it was hot and humid, the water felt REALLY cold though, I'd hazard slightly less than 20 celcius, and that feels pretty cool.

Fair enough, thanks for trying!

Ive seen quite a few sets ups now that have managed to sucsessfully have one in a community. Interesting.
