okay so i visited my lfs today and saw an interesting sight. among the back wall of small 5 gallons, i spotted what looked like a scorpionfish in the freshwater tank....and it was brown. on the tank, they had it labeled a "butterfly grouper". i was so ready to buy it on impulse, but i had never seen it before and wanted to research it first. first and foremost, it IS a poisonous fish, so i'd have to be real careful with it. i tried doing a search on google and i couldn't find anything on it at all. after some more extensive research, i found out that it can also be called a "freshwater waspfish". has anyone kept these guys before? they look really small and really cool. i'm thinking of keeping them in a species only tank.

here's a link to the only good picture i could find online:

If I recall correctly, they are brackish. Good job on not buying on impulse btw.

ITs Vespicula depressifrons which is a brackish fish, it wont do at all well in freshwater. Its also a predator, and very pretty, i fancy some in with my Fig8 Puffers

I have 2 in my Brack tank with 4 F8 puffers, cracking little fish with lots of personality.

Can't say I have heard of them biting I certainly have no fears about sticking my hand in the tank at cleaning time. The venom is in the dorsal fin I think although I'm not sure on that. If you don't want to get stung don't grab them :good:

Hi
I have a figure 8 puffer on his own at the mo as i cannot decide what to put with him. I quite like the look of these but have not seen them around. Any ideas where i can get them? How big do they grow? What SG do the need? What size tank do the need?
Thanks
Haylea

That's as much info as I could find really.

These fish do not bite. They do sting you if you try to grab them, or bump them carelessly. They are brackish and prefer high end salinity. I have a thread going about mine. Its in my sig

I have 3 myself. They are extremely cool, and enjoy each others company. I had a single specimen for a while, and he was skiddish. Since the addition of the other 2, he has really perked up. I keep the SG at 1.010 and feed them LIVE foods: brine shrimp, tubifex worms, feeder guppies. I can't say enough about these fish. :)
