I was told that I could keep two butterfly cichlids with shell dwellers in a 10 gallon aquarium. I was wondering if anyone from here has heard this or not. My water ph is 7.6 so I was told that is fine. My nitrate is 5, amonia 0, and nitrite is 0. I hope that is ok.

Do you mean dwarf African butterfly cichlids [Anomalochromis thomasi ] ?

I've never kept shellies , but if that's the right fish , just clarify , and maybe some else can answer your question , though I :dunno: of it working in a 10 g .

That is the one if it only gets to be about 3 inches. I really was not sure myself that is why I came here and asked rather then buy them to find out it did not work.

Yup that's it , O.K , Sit tight and maybe someone can say for sure . I think a ten gal may be to small for both species . Tight for a breeding pair of thomosis .

It may take a while to get a more definate responses , it's good to ask first , then to find out it's not going to work out later .

I originally got these fish from a friend for whom I am maintaining them so she can have them back after she has the facilities for fish again. I have 7 of them. They have turned out to be 3 breeding pairs and 1 solitary specimen. They already were adult sized when I received them. They are being maintained in a 100 gallon tank.

Nope, ya cant.

The only fish that you can keep with shellies is either
a. a bristlenose pleco
b. a school of danios

and in that tank, neither would work.

What kind of shellies are you thinking of getting?

Nope, I think a 10 gallon is too small for one African butterfly, much less two, compatability issues or not. Being that they pretty much only use the surface area, you need a tank with a biiger footprint to keep them.

Many top dwellers will work with multies, but most top dwellers suitable for them are also unsuitable for a 10 gallon because they tend to be quick swimmers and shoalers. Your best bet in a tank that small is to keep it a multi species tank.
