Ok, so there is a bit of a story to this...

I put one of my pregnant platys into a double breeding net, but I had to put my beta in there too while I got his own tank set up. I put the divider up and placed some cardboard there too so the beta couldn't see the platy.

The next day, I came home and the divider was knocked down, but the peice of cardboard was still sort of blocking them off so I didn't think much of it. When I went to put my beta in his own tank, I noticed the platy wasn't in a good shape. Her scales seemed a little weird and she had this white stuff on her mouth.

I took a pic of it. It looks like she has white lipstick on. I know the pic isn't the best, but surely you can see what I mean

Please let me know what you think. I feel so bad for her. I didn't mean for this to happen, I honestly thought the divider would be enough for a day or 2.

Is she going to die?

Anyone?

I don't want any disease or anything to spread if that's what she has now because one of my other platys had fry on 29/5/08 and then 2 of my mollies had fry today :D

I don't want them, or my sick platy to die

hmm.
how is she swimming around and stuff?
does she look like she struggling to survive?
is the white stuff the only kind of damage to her?
i have no idea what it is. lol.
im only 13..
hmm..
does she seem fine to you?

My LFS just told me to put some water conditioner in the tank because of the babies I have in there. So I bought a small heater and I'm setting up a small tank for the baby fish so that I can fully treat the big tank.

I'm so upset. One of my other fish has it too. It looks like her mouth is falling off! :-(
She's one of the fish that had babies yesterday. I don't want her to die, I really like her and I've been waiting forever to get some of her babies! She is black with white speckles :)

I hope they can hold out until tomorrow!

They said because of the salts in it. It should stop/minimize it spreading any further through the tank.

He then said to move my babies in their own tank so that I could treat the infected tank with a proper fungus treatment, which I have done

Wilder - I didn't see your comment until just now. I didn't put her out of her misey because she seems normal? She swims around and eats like normal. The fungus stuff hasn't seemed to have gone any further.

She wouldn't stay still to take a photo, so I took a short video. You can see how normal she moves and you can see the white thing I was talking about.

I hope it works and you can see.

The video link keeps stopping and starting a being slow.
It looked bad on her mouth but if its not rotting the mouth away she might stand a chance.
What meds are you using for the columnaris.

The meds I'm using are called Aqua Master Fungus Cure. From the company Aristo Pet.

Her mouth doesn't seem to be rotting any further (of either fish), but it is still white there? Will it always stay white because the damage has been done?

I read that it can basically rot their face away!

I think if it were to happen, it would of by now right? It's been like a week or so since I first noticed it.

Cross posting here to my thread if its the same thing - i'm confused now because i read before that you need antibacterial meds for this and not antifungal, so is that correct or not?

Are you having any results with your anti fungal meds?

Well like in my above post, it doesn't seem to be spreading any further, but it's still white?

Like a few days ago I swear it looked like my black mollies mouth was about to fall off! But they swim and eat as usual so I assume it's working? I'm still in mid-treatment though.

Yes columnaris is bacerial not fungal thats why you need to use bacterial meds.
Is good that the med stopped the rotting you will need to carry on with the med as it can take longer to treat.
Yes the mouth should clear up completely if the meds up to the job.
In the uk somtimes bacterial meds keep the desease from spreading but not strong enough to cure it.

Thanks for your help Wilder :good: :D

I guess I will just keep using the water conditioner and fungus treatmeant until it clears up.

I think my lil fishies will be OK :D

You need a bacterial med not fungal med.
