ok I posted some pics a while back here asking for id on a perch.
after much conflagulation I'm sure it is a Ctenopoma kingsleyae, and after doing the research on this name I brought him home today and placed him in my 72 gal tank.
having netted him I have a bit more info to try and get a definative id.
he has spines that protrude from the gill plates, he also has sharp spines on his dorsal fin (first hand experiance there

current size is 6" (15.2cm) from tip to tail.
there are two (one on either side) silver scales below the eyes (which are orange btw) just where the mouth starts.
oh and the lateral line seems to be broken with the front part higher than the back part with an overlap of about 1" in the middle. (note this is the first fish I can really tell what the lateral line looks like).
the upshot of this post is
I have either made a great purchase or I've made a great mistake, I'm sure it is not the latter.
