What does it mean if the anus is kinda of bumped out? I'm noticing it on my loaches and ram, seperate tank. It's not discolored and there doesn't seem to be anything coming out except normal poo. It's just odd and my rams got bigger so now I'm wondering whats going on

thanks

Do you mean there lumps around the anus.
Or the anus is swollen and enlarged.

Enlarged and yes a bit swollen looking..the only real way to discribe is that instead of it being a straight line on their underside there is a bump (like a speed bump) where the anus is. No redness, my ram has actually deepened in color and looks healthy. Same with kuhli loach, its enlarged and is like a bump on the underside. Color in loach didn't deepen though. I looked up Camallanus and it doesn't really look like that and theres definately not thin worms coming out. Ram honestly looks like its constipately maybe..thats how the poo looks.

I know this may be confusing, I'm sorry
thanks

Edit:: was watching my loach with this bum issue and he is sitting there tensing all of his muscles. Like you can see his muscle tense n move on the lower half and then the top half and then all together and stuff like that. Thought this was really weird and didn't know if the two are related

Feed some shelled peas. To see if it could be just a case of constipation.
Don't feed any other foods for a few days.
Is there any fluffy fungus around the opening of the anus.

If there no improvement get back to the board.
Also keep an eye on all fish for long stringy white poo, clear mucas waste.
Worms sticking out of the anus.
Also fish looking bloated, and scales sticking out.

ok how do you feed peas? steam/cook and then squish? does it need to be organic?

what exactly to worms look like? I'm just looking for something wiggling to be honest. Google pics always seem different or vague

Cook frozen garden peas for a few minutes in boiling water. Let cool down and pop out of shell. Chop into tiny pieces and add to the tank.
Sometimes fish won't eat peas the first time. So keep trying.
Remove uneaten peas from tank.
The peas don't have to be organic.
Must remove the shell as fish can't digest the shell bit.

You will see white or red worming poking out of the anus.
Get a magifying glass just to make sure it's not fish waste.

yea im 90% sure its worms. That means this stupid store has given 2 different species that have worms! grr! I'm getting jungle parasite guard from them...we'll see if that helps i guess T.T tried internal parasite med food and the ram wont eat it

Thanks for the update.
Good luck.

Is it possible for fish to have benign worms? o_O Because like I said I think my ram has camallanus worms or something because he has a bunch of red hairs coming out of the anus. But his behavior isnt really off either. Half the time he will be kind of clamped and on the substrate but then I give him food and he will be swimming around and his colors are really dark. I should treat for these right? its not good for him to have worms or are there beneficial ones out there?

The camallanous worms need killing off. The cause internal damage and bacterial infections.
Also you have to retreat the med.

Get you a link to camallanous worms to make sure you used the right med.

Does it say in the med instructions when to retreat?

Camallanus

Symptoms:

When the fish is stationary, deep red worms can be seen protruding from the anal pore. They are only visible when the fish is still because the worms retreat into the intestine at the fishs slightest movement. Other signs may include an inflamed and enlarged anus. In severe infestations, the fish may become emaciated and spinal curvature may also occur.

Cause:

The parasitic worms Camallanus Cotti and Camallanus lacustris. These small, livebearing parasitic worms attach to the intestinal walls and rectum with pinchers. The worms grip is so tight that any attempts to remove it forcibly will rip away tissue from the intestinal wall. The worms pinching causes ischemia (reduced blood flow) to that part of the intestine. In time, the tissue to that part of the intestine will die, at which time the worm will migrate to another part of the intestine. This causes perforations throughout the intestine, which allows other pathogens to gain entry. If the fish is not treated, either the parasite or bacterial will kill the fish. Camallanus infestations occur most often in livebearing fish such as Guppies and Mollies, though infection is possible in all fish. Camallanus infestations are contagious. All fish, including those not yet showing visible symptoms, as well as the aquarium, should be treated.

Treatment:

Treat with Internal Parasite Guard, Pipzine, Disco-Worm, Trichlorfon or Fluke-Tabs as well as a medicated food to prevent a bacterial infection.

Yes I have read articles simular to those. I just find it odd that the worms are visible all the time, they don't retreat. Sometimes they look like they went in a little bit but they are visible at all times. Also the minute he gets food he seems fine and like I said his coloring is very dark now a days...its just weird you know? Made me wonder if these are actually camallanus and if they are always harmful...idk

either way I treated yesterday and have to wait two days before I can treat again. I used tetra parasite guard. It is supposed to cover a decent group of internal and external parasites(specifically says Camallanus on the box)..so we'll see if it works. If it does..I would imagine I will see dead worms on the substrate and none on the ram anymore. What do you do at that point? You mentioned I need to retreat teh tank again but are you supposed to do a deep clean? or is it fine after the second treatment? My problem is that I have sand as the substrate in this one and have not found a proper way to clean it, other than just swirling it around and then doing a water change. Every time I try to siphon it like gravel it jams my siphon hose or just sucks it up and it ends up in my bucket with the dirty water

Do a thread in tropical discussion on the correct way to hoover sand.
Never had sand so don't know how to syphon it properly.

Does the worms look like mincemeat with white bits, or just red hairlike worms.
Do you feed bloodworms.

its thin red hairs coming out of the anus. I feed bloodworms but only freezedried to try and prevent this problem >,<! but obviously that didn't work

I would try and get hold of some levaimsole. Pig wormer. That's the best med for camallanous worms.

I wouldn't recommend freeze dried foods. They can cause constipation and bloating if over fed.

Don't live/frozen offer the risk of parasites? I will try to see if that is available (the levaimsole), thank you
