I was thinking about getting a few guppies for our 29gal tank, and was just wondering if the bumblebee goby would hunt/eat the fry? Actually, I'm hoping it would since I hate just feeding it frozen bloodworm all the time... that is if the other fish don't get to the fry first.

BBGs will indeed eat small guppy fry, given the chance. Does rather depend on there being resting places close to where the guppy fry are lurking. But I doubt they'll make huge inroads into the guppy broods. I keep gobies with cherry shrimps, and while I dare say the BBGs eat some of the baby shrimps (which are smaller than guppy fry) enough survive that I have more shrimps than I really know what to do with.

Do consider getting multiple BBGs: they're much more fun when chasing one another about.

Cheers, Neale

Oh I'd like to get more, but this one is enough of a pain in the butt to deal with. I just can't get over how picky it is with food and would hate to get more just as picky.
Hmm... well.. I guess I could try the guppies, maybe get some ghost shrimp as well and hope the goby eats the baby shrimp if they have any.

For what it's worth, the BBG in this freshwater tank has been there for at least a year, and apart from odd frozen bloodworm, he seems to subsist on cherry shrimp babies.

Okedoke.
We've had this guy for about a year now as well (give or take a month), and other than his recent hunger strike where he almost died, he's been great.
I wasn't hoping to use him to keep the guppy or shrimp population down or anything like that, was just wondering if it would hunt and eat them if it could.

I would love to get some cherry shrimp. They are so pretty. But I've never seen any of the stores here with them. So, ghost shrimp it is for me heh

Welp, just wanted an update on what I decided to do.
I was going to get some female guppies, but decided against it. Instead I got 2 female dwarf platy to go w/ the male that's already in the tank. They already look pretty knocked up so maybe soon we'll have some fry swimming about and hopefully BBG will snag a few for dinner.
Also got 8 ghost shrimp as well. So yeah.. crossing fingers we'll have some baby shrimp around as well to supply the fish with some snacks :D

Good luck with it. I have a swarm of 10 gobies in my brackish tank and have to agree with Neale...they're so much fun to watch when chasing each other out of their territories. I found in a bigger group they eat what they can as the competition is higher for food. I feed mine on small live bloodworm and they also eat the scraps of mussel etc that the F8 puffers leave behind. Small river shrimp are also pursued and chomped on.
