hi
i seen some bumble bee gobys in my lfs shop, but i know nothing about them and wouldn,t want to just plonk them in my community tank if there agressive, any info and i would be grateful

Bumble gobies are a brackish fish. They do not suit community set ups as they require a level of salt in their water.

They could go with mollies, guppies, swordtails and endlers as those are all capable of surviving in brackish conditions but those are about it.

I'll add my own question to this thread... I've heard they're capable of surviving in a tank with rock salt... is that true, or is sea salt best?

Sea salt is best. Rocksalt doesnt contain all 70 of the trace minerals that are present in marine salt and its long term use can affect fishes health and growth.

There are many other brackish fish they can live with, figure 8 puffers, glass fish (unpainted), other small gobies and small flounders would all make great tankmates.

do some research. there seems to be both a fw strain and a bw strain of bbgs. i have a fw one. i have not found him/her (still trying to get it to hold still long enough to sex it) to be at all aggressive, but they won't take any crap from other fish either, which makes them excellent tankmates for pufferfish. they are pretty good at keeping the bottom clean too. mine loves bloodworm.

i adore their puggy little faces, the way they sit and just stare you down. they may be small, but have a lot of character.

My lfs has some bumble bee gobys and he does not keep them in salt water.
I am going to get some when i get my 2.5 tank.
I will tell you more then unless you already have found out by xmas.

brackish fish can live in fresh water but they wont live very long in those conditions.
most fish stores that sell brackish fish keep them in freshwater.
i had 2 with my flounders and often they would quarrel or nip at each other (they were male and female)
one died and soon after the other did too. i think he got lonely :-(

bumble-bee gobies can get a little teritorial, but unlike puffers they aren't in any position to do much damage. It would be rather like a mouse trying to kill an elephant ... wait a minute ... elephants are scared of mice .... nm forget everything I just said.

Actualy there are two different species of bumble bee goby. One is entirely brackish and the other is entirley freshawter.

Brachygobius Doriae are brackish.

Brachygobius Aggregatus are Freshwater.

Both species grow to the same siz and require the same care in almost everything, accept that one is brackish and the other is freshwater.

i'm sure if i remember correctly, that if it has whole banding then it is FW and if it is broken banding then it is BW.

Irember mine being whole banded and they did very well.

it is right that they are territoral . they took up there own spaces in the tank. and they will not take any crap from any other fish no matter how much bigger.

they are great little fish that are funny to watch.

And they are great littel garbage disposers in the tank.

CFC Am I right about the Black MArkings, or did i get it the wrong way round.

I think You were the 1 who told me about which were FW and hich were BW b4 i Went and got them Earlier in the Year .... Can't remember.

I also remember readying somewhere that broken lines are brackish and whole lines are fresh water. Though It seems like many LFS's think they are all BW fish.

I have also never had any problems keeping them. They always seem to get along with everyone else. It is fun watching them pig out during feeding time when you feed worms or brine shrimp. The little bellys get so swollen.

Hah, my LFS thinks they are all FW fish :X
I bought a BW one there a few years ago and they told me it was FW... it died after a few months, of course.
