I'm looking at converting my 24G into a marine tank and was wondering if you can buy a built in skimmer.
One of the tanks we sell at work has a built in system which includes skimmer, heater and filter which would be perfect for this tank.
Can you buy them seperate and are there any particular makes to look out for?
Any help much appreciated.

the best on ive seen, is an auto top up sump with a skimmer built in or make your own

Thanks for the reply, Truck.
We haven't got the time to make our own although I'm sure my better half would give it a go if he did.
We haven't the room for a sump either because of where the tank is.
It just seems a more suitable idea for us to have a built in system.

Partition the back pane and have holes drilled and grilles fitted so as water can access the back chambers then install either a hang-on or internal skimmer.

Thanks BigC. :good:

Thanks Ben, I'll have a look into that tomorrow when I'm at work. :good:

you can certainly get some in-tank skimmers

The problem tends to be fitting the under the lid

I have an old tunze comline skimmer u can have if its any good to u

Hi Mike,
Do you know if it would be suitable for this tank?

It's 24G and is no longer seperated. We were hoping to keep the lid on and convert it to T5 lighting.
We can't decide whether to convert this tank or use the 48G tank for a marine set up. I'm hoping this one will be suitable because the bigger one is ideal as a Plec breeding tank!

you would have to butcher the lid

I'll bring it over next weekend and u can take a look

Hang fire just a mo Stang, why cant you opt for a hang-on type. you may not be able to get to the aquarium rim to do this but a little bit of diy and a nice bracket could be the answer to your problem. The pump would have to reside in the main tank but it would be a lot less smaller than an internal. Most internals take up a fair bit of room and are unsightly to say the least. Plus dont forget you have to remove the whole unit every once in a while for cleaning. Try doing that in a mature reef with Liverock everywhere.
Think about other options before diving in as it were.

I can understand what you are saying BigC but it's more about how the better half wants it to look. He doesn't want an overhead lighting system and he wants a built in skimmer. If we aren't able to do this, then we will have a rethink but just wanted to see if it was possible. The tank has an external filter so I suppose it was more a case of finding a built in skimmer.
He's not bothered about the DIY side of things because that's the part he really enjoys and I know he's more than capable of doing just that.
We've had a marine tank before so know what it entails when it comes to maintenance.
To be honest, I'd rather set up my old 48G as a marine because we still have the skimmer, lighting etc. to do so. Just trying to keep my man happy! ;)

i believe you could if you want lr use that as the main filteration

and if not i was told by lfs so could be bullsh** that you can put v2 skimmers in as long as the top isnt under the water.

We prefer to run a skimmer as well as having live rock in the tank. I know it's probably not necessary but that's how we ran one before and we had no problems.
We already have a V2 skimmer and the unit sits on the side of the tank so it wouldn't be an option as there isn't room for it.
Thanks for the suggestion, though. :good:
