Looks like a matured dragonfly nymph. Was it directly in the water or above? Either way I dont think its going to help in your tank so I'd chuck it.

well, a dragonfly's #1 prey is misquitos i believe.

I will concur, that is a dragonfly

anyways, I'd chuck him. I seriously dobut you have misquito/misquito larva in your tank, so he'll start eating your fry. Completly harmless to you. just open the lid and let him zoom.

doh - replied on the other thread...

The also eat small fish (eg fry) - get rid ;)

From the image you have provided it is a nymph and probably of the order Plecoptera Commonly called a stonefly

The immature form are aquatic and resemble the adults with the exception of gills.

Larvae are either primarily herbivoredetritivores, insectivores, or omnivores, and in some cases their diet shifts among these categories as they develop.

the most common form is herbivoredetritivores and would probably be feeding on plant and decaying plant matter in the aquarium. It is unlikely that the adults would lay there eggs in the tank if there was no food source of this type to provide sustinance to their young.

I would not have thought this to be a problem in a fish tank and is probably a compliment to your skills as they only lay there eggs in slow moving, well oxygenated water.

I doubt that its a dragonfly nymph as the antennae is quite large and visible in your photo, although they do have antennae they are usually small and difficult to see with the naked eye.

I would still want rid if it was in my tank.

Thanks everyone.

It's going in the garden - into the pond! The fish in there can eat it if they want to, they're big enough. I'm not risking putting it back with the fry.

agreed.its one for sure.i have to know when i tie flies to mimic it

I think it would be nice to try to raise stone fly larvae to feed to my killies, that would be pretty cool. Dont know how I'd go about it though...
