I have 7 bettas (ok-not ALL are mine) and they all build bubble nests but not all the time. Do they only build bubble nests when they are happy? :dunno:

I have 2 bettas (in different tanks, obviously) and we have never seen a bubble nest from either :/
The one will come up and stare at me whenever I look at the tank, like he's talking to me! :D
Obviously I'm hoping that bubble nests aren't a sign of happiness... :p

I have happy bettas who never build me a bubble nest. Lots of bettas do that tho,it means that is THEIR territory and they like their tank. :) I think my other bettas are just lazy.

My betta is in a very reflective tank when the light is on. Therefore he sees when the light is on but not when the light is off. When I leave the light on every night about 3-4 hours, a bubblenest soon appears. When I dont have the light on... exactly, no bubblenest. To me it is almost as if he is building a better nest then the other fish(himself) just in case a little lady comes by. :flex:

yea mine only builds it when the lights are off too ..

not sure why.. but ive never seen them building one .. they just appear in the morning

ya..i think it's a mixture of both dark, and other betta's. one night, i left the mirror next to my betta, and next morning he had a huge nest goin. i think it's like "FLARE FLARE FLARE FLARE......*lights off* ok...he's gone....i better hurry up and build a nest....JUST incase sum hottie comes by. :hey: i want that ~show off~ to know who's boss!!" 8)

i swear, when you put them next to a mirror, i can just hear them saying "oh my...you're mighty handsom! looks like i got tough compitition!" :shifty:

lol. makes me think of that p!nk song "don't let me get me".

I don't know if its happiness, I think my betta is just really horny. I once had to put him in a small jar temporarily to stop him eating my mollie fry before I could catch them and he immediately started building a bubble nest. This is in about 750mL of water! He builds them constantly, light or dark, even if there's a current. (He built a nest in a 15g with an aquaclear and bubble wall). I always see him building them, they seem to gulp a bit of air from the surface then spit it out. They move there head back and forth one bubble at a time- it looks exhausting! Bettas have such varying personalities, it seems there's no "typical" betta. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you want to breed them. :D

OK....this is a dumb question.....I have only had my male betta for 24 hours and I think he has allready started a bubble nest....do the bubbles look like soapy bubbly things? they are only in his little trap and only appeared this afternoon!!

Yes,your betta has made you a bubble nest. :)
