So why aren't my boys making them then? What am I doing wrong?
It could be a number of things. Here are some of the possobilities:
-They could be to old. If you bought them from a pet store, chances are, they will be old men by now, lol!
-They could be bored. Some males won't even attempt to build a bubble nest unless there is a woman in sight. Figures.
-Sometimes a water change can stimulate them to do so. Try putting them in a different container and see if that get's them going. Be carefull though, you don't want any temperature difference between the two containers.
I really hope this helps. If you're trying to breed betas, make sure the male can see and smell the female for maximum results.
My betta rarely makes bubblenests. He made one of the second day and I was so excited, but he's only made a few since then (I've had him a year). I am sure all is right in his set-up (4-5 gallon bowl, heated to 79F, filtered, low flow etc) but he just rarely does it.
Recently I've been feeding him some more bloodworms after a whileof not doing so and he has made a few bubble nests, although they are small and rubbish compared to others I've seen. I see him trying every so often though. Blowing bubbles at the surface, but they just burst.
When he does make them he always makes them against or under a silk plant which kinda folds over the water so the top bit floats. Want to try a stryophome (sp?) cup but can't find one and don't want to buy a whole pack as they;re bad for the environment (spot the hippy).
