I bought a piece of mopani from the LFS, soaked it in cold dechlorinated tap water for a couple of weeks and then put into tank...an algal growth has developed over the bare sections of wood, and on the underside I found this slimy-feeling bubble mat...any need to worry? Its been in the tank about a week; the tank is undergoing fishless cycling, temp of water 30C, pH 8, variable NH£ 0-2; NO2 1-4; NO3 40+

Is there a good way to treat the wood to remove whatever it is? Give it the kettle treatment perhaps?

It's from all the ammonia. Don't worry about it, just wipe it down real nice after you've done a 100% change once your fishless cycle is over and plop it back in.
