I added some bogwood and mopani wood to my tank I did soak them first, but my bog wood is huge, so anyways i put them into the tank and now the water has turned brown (tannings), i have carbon in the filter as i heard it helped, but the water is still brown, i did a 50% water change as well, it diluted the colour a bit but its still brown, will it go in time or is there anything else i can do to help it?

There isn't a great deal else you can do, The atnnins will probably get less and less as time goes on.

I have a piece of bogwood and mopani wood in my tank aswell, I soaked them for two days, before putting them in. They have been in for months now around 5 months I think and they still release tannins. Water changes relieve it for a while. I quite like the browny look, it's more natural.

I know carbon filters are supposed to clear it, I think polyester filters might do aswell.

it can take any amount of time to stop leaching (some pieces will take months, others weeks, and some even days). we have a large peice of bogwood (i don't think mopani is supposed to be quite as bad) and it has just about stopped leaching, we've had it for about 6 months, but the person that had it before us said that he'd had it in his tank, so who knows for how long he had it in there.
all we did was a third water change once a week, which helps, if you really don' liek the colour you can always do two water changes a week, which is what we did, when the water was really brown.
but to be honest with you, the fish actually prefer the colour, like chisnfips said it is more natural!
:D

Tannins are actually beneficial to many fish, particualy catfish, they apparently have some sort of antibacterial qualitys towards catfish.
Its difficult to say when the wood will stop leaking tannins, somtimes it just takes a couple of weeks, somtimes months. Pre-soaking the wood helps although i don't usually bother, i just do lots of water changes for the first couple of weeks, i added some bogwood to a non bogwood tank the other day with some corys and plecs in it, their activity increased dramically after i added the bogwood and the plecs seemed to clean the tank glass alot more and just generally more active, so im enjoying my tannins while they last :) .

I filter through peat because I like the look of it. IMO it brings out the colour of the fish better and makes for a more natural environment, at least for the fish I keep. Search tannin or blackwater on this site for a ton of info on it's benefits. :)

thanks for the post guys i didnt realise it had good propertys so i wont worry about it anymore! cheers for putting my mind at rest!
