Hello all, Help please. I am currently refitting a tank which has only had plants in it for some time. Although it was not heated the plants were doing very well. I then tranfered them to a smaller tank to allow access to the larger. on returning from a weeks holiday I found the plants to be heavily coated with a brownish deposit the only differenc to the previous setup was that the lights were closer to the plants. Is this what has caused the problem?

A pic would help us work out whats going on here, also your tanks stats, pH, lighting, tank size, ferts, substrate, etc, etc.

Sounds like brown algae which can be caused by poor lights. Increasing the light should make this go away. Also fish like the Otto will clear it in a few days.

Your tank stats would be useful to correctly diagnose the problem.

thanks for the above. I do not have ability to add photo at this time. but the water and substrate were transfered with the plants from the original tank the same lighting was used as well. is it possible that this was caused by an increase in the lighting ?
