Hi All,

I am not sure if this is an emergency or not but here goes. I have just discovered this brown algae all over the substrate in my tank.

I have no real plants only plastic and a couple of silk, also a couple of the silk plants have this algae on them. The only fish in the tank at the moment are 6 Neon Tetras.

I put the tetras in wednesday and today I have noticed that two of them are displaying signs of White Spot. Could the two thing's be connected. I have elevated the temperature in the tank to 30°c and I am buying some white spot treatment tomorrow.

My questions are is the Algae a problem and should I be worried and am I going the right way for treating the tetras for white spot.

Rich :(

the alge isnt a problem just turn your lights off for more of the day.... say 10 hours instead of twelve.

as for the whitespot i take it your cycleing your tank with fish...
this isn`t the best way to go about it but good luck, i`d leave the temp down until you have the white spot treatment, and add extra airiation, as the higher temp and the meds wil drain LOADS of oxygen out of the water.

Can't help you with the white spot, but the brown 'smuthering' algae usually occurs during the first few months of a new tank set up. I'm currently battling it with our new coldwater set up.

I just scrape it off all the glass then vac it up, twice a week, the stuffs a buggar but it dies down after a while.

i struggled with algea for 2 months but got rid of it by cutting down the time the light was on and whenever the light is off, i cover the tank with a black out curtain. this completly shifted mine in 4 or 5 days.

Its the warm weather as well, just do abit more tank maintance, and increase aeration in the tank.
