Is algae a good sign during a fishless cycle that i am a fair amount through it, or is it just what happens when the tank has been running for 2.5 weeks? Im itching to clean it and do some water changes, but alas, i will try to be patient. bah

Cheers

We need more information really to help:

- What does the algae look like
- What product are you using for the fishless cycle and what are it's ingredients ?
- How much are you adding ?
- How long are your aquarium lights on for every day
- What are your water readings ? (Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Phosphate etc)
- What substrate / plants do you have ?
- How big is the tank and where is it situated ?

weird to be honest, sits on the bogwood, brown, tiny little clumps, and sometimes falls onto the sand. (Not on the glass). Theres not loads, and it would be easily manageable if i could start a cleaning routine, but its cycling! Hence the question being more about if it is a stage i cycling tank goes through.

Ammonia from homebase

- How much are you adding ?

3-4 ppm when the ammonia drops right down

- How long are your aquarium lights on for every day

about 6-7 hours

- What are your water readings ? (Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Phosphate etc)

depends on time due to cycle.. after 12 hours, 0.25 ammonia, 1-2 nitrites, not bothered with nitrates yet, as pointless in the this stage of the cycle.

- What substrate / plants do you have ?

Sand with first layer laterite, java fern, valis spiralis, and some new anubias.

- How big is the tank and where is it situated ?

180litres, 47 USg. in the lounge by the sofa (just kidding ;).. ) i mean.. not facing a window apart from one side, but not in direct sunlight.

Hope that helps..

Diatoms. This is just a natural result of a cycling or cycled tank. You can just clean it off and siphon it out if you like. It's completely harmless. All FW tanks will experience this at some point. It ususally shows up during the cycle. It will eventually stop forming after a couple of weeks.

Excellent.. Thanks very much.
