LauraFrog, sorry for the debate in other topic talking about should or shouldn't inbreeding. So I start new topic for you.

If you want copper black and pied platies to become purebred strains then you need to separating the males from the female fry when the fry become sexable. Then record these fry from which parents. So use few female from this batch to be bred by other best and healthier males from different batch from different fish. You need to keep track them for the record to make sure there's not too much inbreeding but that's okay. If you feel that this best male of this batch, you may use this male to breed to its sisters or half sisters to get desireable traits. Use a half brother to breed to half sister, not full siblings.

If you see a new blood of copper black strain male, grab it and use it to the virgin females of any batch but not lots of females, just save them for another new blood or best breeder males. Remove the colored fry that you don't want. Culling deformed fry and belly sliders. Use only healthiest platies for breeding. Just set up some tubs, record them to see whose fry, what bloodline come from and what sex is in the tub.

Of course there's "late blooming" males and early males can ruining your project so be careful to looking at the fry closer.

Hope its helps for your project of black copper and pied platies strains.
