Bronze Vs Peppered

Ok, so if I got a 30 gallon how many bronze or peppered could I have?

Now you're talking!!!

You could easily keep a group of 10-12 of either in a tank that size - you could push it higher with a good maintenance regimen.

That would be sweet. I saw some for 80-100$ on craigslist and I ask my dad about it last night. He'll tell me his answer when he gets home tonight I think. (pray for me!) :)

If you go with a smaller number of them in the 30, you could actually turn your three tanks into an assembly line of cories...

30 Gal... 6 adults 2F:4m  - when they spawn....

You move the eggs into a 10.  Let them start to grow up in there... So this becomes a "grow out" tank in a way.

If the cories spawn again in the 30, you put the new eggs into the other 10.  And keep the two age groups separated.

As the first batch gets a little bigger and start to "outgrow" the 10, you can put them into the 30 for a little until they are big enough to take to the LFS for a few bucks...

Then you repeat the process with the first 10 again with the next batch of eggs...  It should work on a nice little cycle.  About every 2-3 weeks might work to save the eggs.  Leave all the others in the 30, and if any grow out of that, great - if not... oh well.

Just a thought...

Also, have you offered to do EXTRA chores?

I'm not sure just some chores would do it. I work some around the house already. Plus they wouldn't be paying for it, I would.

That setup sounds cool. I might do it if I got the tank. How many fry could I keep per batch this way? I'm pretty sure 250 would still be overstocking, and that's how many my female had last time.

So how do you move the eggs? I heard they shouldn't touch air. When the eggs are still soft I usually move them into a breeder net if I'm keeping the parents in that tank and if I'm moving the parents I leave the eggs.

Plastic container... submerge the container into the tank, fill it with the eggs (removing leaves as needed) and move the whole container to the new tank - leaving the eggs to 'float' in the new tank for a while.  Personally, I'd probably just let them stay in the container floating in the new tank until about 2 days had passed... Adding meth blue to the container (won't stain the whole tank this way) and complete 50% water changes daily (with an airstone in the container)...  by the time the eggs are ready to hatch, the meth blue levels will be way down...  Once the fry hatch out, you can release them into the tank.

If you want to grow out 250 fry, you are going to need about a 50 gallon long tank...  If you are trying to maximize a single "batch", then you'd want to split them between the two tens, then move some to the 30 and do it a single batch at a time...  but even then, 250 is going to be pushing the bounds.  Unless you are willing to do twice daily water changes or something...

The moment the fry start growing, you are in deep trouble with that amount of fry at one time. Just don't collect all eggs if you've got no space. If you wish, you can try....but in my opinion it's pushing it a lot, not matter how many water changes you do.

I was just wondering since he said I could have 2 females and 4 males.  That would give me 500 eggs each spawn.

Also, if I had a group of peppers and bronze, like 5-6 of each, would they still be as active as if it were all one type?

If you have the size of tank, then you can keep 6 of each. I don't see a problem. Bronze corys will socialize with other corys, not sure about the peppers, but surely they'll be suitable tank mates.
I've got a single cory C.142 that the shop gave me for free as it was being eaten alive by green barbs. My albino and gold laser corys would go and kind of nudge him from time to time, or just "sit" next to him to make him feel welcomed. He doesn't like them much though and prefers his own company, so it depends on the species of corys a lot but it's safe to say all of them need a few of their own kind, then if you have space, you can have a couple of different schools if the conditions are right for all species.

So if I were to keep 12 corys in a 30 gallon, which would be better for breeding, 6 peppers and 6 bronze, or all bronze? Would a big group of bronze spawn together of would only a few?

Depends whether they've reached a mature spawning age. I have 9 green cories, and only two females have laid eggs so far.

well, I can't really be sure bc I don't know how old they were when I bought them, they were small though. I would say they are 1 1/2-2 years at a minimum.

So there are more than 2 females? The others just never participate in spawning?

If I got a 30 gallon and stocked it with a bronze breeding group of 12 I'd want them all to spawn at the same time. That's why I thought 6 of bronze and 6 of peppers might work better.
