Where can I find a list of all the Freshwater fish Native to Britain (Or just England).

Any help appreciated.

Ben

Was just interested to see what types of fish live in England as a "Native" tank would be cool.

The problem with keeping temperate fish is keeping the tank cool enough.

I used to keep self caught stone loach and stream gudgeon in a long, low current tank, but I would have to let them go in the early summer or they would die from heatstroke.

Native carp are a lot more resilliant, but get HUGE!

I've not tried others like dace, bream, bitterling etc.

I wonder if it's possible to keep a pike? you'd need a big tank, you can often see 3 footers basking in the sun in my local canal!

Heat was what I was also wondering about. It gets to 24C no problem in my room.

However in one of my LFS they have LOTS of Coldwater fish inside and I cant imagine the water would be too cold in that.

I'd like to find out, but since you may be interested in giving this a go, I reckon you should. How about a few sticklebacks. There's absolutely millions of them at the height of summer, so there is a possibility they'll thrive in warmer waters. :)

Its not so much the heat that kills them but the oxygen levels, coldwater fish require much more oxygen than their tropical counterparts and as im sure everyone knows the warmer the water the less disolved oxygen it can carry.

I once kept a few coldwater fish that i had caught in, it was a 55 gallon tank and i had a eel, a perch and several roach but ended up with just one very fat eel after it ate all the others within a few months :( .

-_- I wonder if thats why my stugeons vanished in the hot weather, they need lots of oxygen .

They must have just died

Deffinatly a dwarf oscar, that would be REALLY cool.
