This may have happened a few days ago during a fight with his larger brother, but i've only just seen him come out today is there any thing i can do to assist the healing or is it just a case it will fall off?, as it moves around quite a bit with the water current.

It might just fall off.
Any sourness around the breakage.
If water quality is good it should heal on its own.

well unfortunatly he passed away during the night on closer inspection there seemed to be little wrong with him apart from his fins also being a little ragged but i put this down to fighting, but now im worried about everyone else in there as they really dont seem their usual selves.

water stats are:-

Tank size:300l
pH:7.4
ammonia:0ppm
nitrite:0ppm
nitrate:40ppm maybe a little higher (tap water reads 20ppm)
oxygen 8mg/l
tank temp:24c

All my BN's seem very lothargic and seem to be breathing heavier than normal while all the mid to top level seem fine

Volume and Frequency of water changes:30% weekly

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:none

Tank inhabitants:5 adult BN 10 Danios 6 Columbian tetras and an amount of baby BN's

Nothing has been added to the tank apart from the baby BN's which weren't added but rather created in the tank.Tank has been running for 8 months although the filter was filled with mature media from my other tank.

thanks in advance Jim

Ok bless him R.I.P.
Any signs of laboured breathing.
Any excess mucas on the gills or body of the fish.
What do there gills look like.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing against objects in the tank.
Signs of a bacterial infections with no symtoms are
Being pale or darker in colour.
Being lethagic and listless.
Sometimes not eating.
Also there breathing can also be abit laboured with bacterial infections.
Any fish bloated up or look skinny.

no real signs of any thing untoward externally except on the 2 female BN's who have a slightly redder appearance than usual and seem to be hiding towards the surface of the tank.

The only real change i can see in the tank as a whole is the snail population seems to have increased rapidly over a few days as i'd previously kept on top of them with water changes and removal by net.

Red patches beneath the skin can be septicemia.
Any rotting smails in the tank.

there not red patches more like small lines almost like a bloodshot eye but not heavily concentrated and they are albino too

regards the snails i dont think so or not that you can see anyway

Red streaking on the body and small red dots that line up are also septicemia.
Sounds like it could be septicemia to me.
Is it possible to load a pic up of the sick fish.
