Though its probably me who's not using it properly.
I just realised that the eggs need 24 hour light, so having this thing in the tank won't get that.

Having had help from Heather and Tolak on finding salt:

Any non-iodized salt will work, kosher or pickling salt work just as well. You can find these in the grocery store, around $2 for a 4 pound box.

I managed to find sea salt with no additives at Tescos. Hopefully this will do ?

As for the container, I think I'll try and use the NT hatchery on its own with a light over it 24/7

Hiya 2pods how is the fry coming on?? x :good:

Hi Heather

They're still swimming about with their parents.
I'll need to find out how much salt to put in the bottle etc, then I'll start the bbs again.
Until then it's Liquifry and very crushed up flakes I'm afraid.

Some of them went inside the internal filter and the male was frantically trying to get in too !
However, I just syphoned them out and he took them away again :good:

I've just had an email from a friend a few streets along to tell me his two angels have produced fry for the first time in two years
Must be something in the water :hey:

The sea salt will work fine, it has some minerals along with the salt, which is a good thing. Those minerals will increase hardness. Unless you have very hard water with a higher pH you will need to add baking soda and/or epsom salt to the water along with the sea salt.

My pH out of the tap is 7.7, gh of 11, kh of 6. In my bottle I add 2 tablespoons of salt and 1 teaspoon of baking soda to hatch out 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons of bbs. I'm guessing the bottle holds 1.5 liters, maybe a little less.

An excellent source of info & such for bbs is Brine Shrimp Direct, http://www.brineshrimpdirect.com/

I've been ordering bbs from them for a few years, I just got 3 pounds in a couple days ago.

Try putting a piece of foam or sponge over the intake of the filter, this will diffuse the intake, and prevent fry from being sucked in.

I've found that spawning fish do tend to go at the same time. This can often be attributed to the weather, low pressure systems will induce spawning. I keep an eye on the national radar, and see what is coming my way. A couple days before a good low is comind I'll do some large water changes with cooler water, and feed heavily. I usually get a spawn in less than a week.

Well, that was that !

I came in this morning to the two adults and no fry :(

I think they must have been eaten

Peter

These things happen. Don't worry, they will spawn again. This will give you a little time to work on your bbs hatchery. If you have any smaller fish, especially corys, you can feed them bbs.

Aww sorry to hear that 2pods..Better luck next time :good: ..and as tolak said this will give you time to sort out your bbs hatchery..Remember they may spawn in a week or two.. :hyper:

I could have taken them out, but I wanted to see if the parents would continue to look after them.

In some cases the parents will raise the babies themselves very well..and in other they wont..I removed my fry once they were free swimming. :good: x
