My first post here. Hoping for some insight from successful breeders.

My Gold Severum spawned two weeks ago and I followed several dealers advice about leaving them in the tank and leaving a small light on to protect. The next day - they were gone - eaten - but by who?

They spawned again and this time I removed the eggs and placed in a new tank. Little by little the eggs are changing color. I put in some Methyl Blu if this is in fact fungus. I don't know if the eggs are yellow or white now - reallly can't tell.

The questions are: What color do the eggs change to?

How long before they hatch? The dealer whom I really trust and believe says 3-7 days.

Should I leave the light on throughout to faciliate warmth and light to force hatching?

I have food for the fry and have the filter covered up.

I'm just very hopeful that we get something from the spawn.

Thanks in advance for reading.

They are great fish to have and keep.

What color do the eggs change to? The eggs arnt ment to change colour, it means they're not getting enough air fanned over them or they indeed have fungus, i recomend putting something like a bubble bar/air stone near the eggs to keep the air over them

How long before they hatch? The dealer whom I really trust and believe says 3-7 days. He is correct

Should I leave the light on throughout to faciliate warmth and light to force hatching?I wouldn't think light makes a diffrerence, i could be wrong though

Good Luck

if the eggs change from a clearish color, to a white non translucent color, it usually means theyve got fungus on them, and wont hatch. parents often eat their eggs, so thats most likely what happened. sometimes it takes parents a few spawns to realize they shouldnt be eating the eggs. it can be frustrating, but be patient. a pair that spawns and takes care of their fry is worth a lot more then a pair that you have to take out everytime after they lay eggs. its also a lot less effort on your part if they raise the fry themselves

Thanks,

I have some free swimmers now on the third day and will try some of the liquid food. They are moving about quickly - hard to believe. Wow. Love Severums and hopeful to have a few to watch how this process goes.

Thanks again

Update - we have seven free swimmers after a week. So there was fungus and I didn't use the airstone and the Methyl Blue must have been too late with a filtered tank. Better luck next time. But we have some eating voraciously and swimming all over now. It took a few days to get out of the wiggler mode (have eyes and have stomachs formed). An ichthyologist I'm not, but enjoying seeing what occurs.

Going to try letting the parents care for them again next time.

Thanks for the help and tips. Severum are a good fish to keep.

We lost the small fry and I don't know why. I left a lot of food in there and the fish dealer I get things from said to siphon the extra food from the bottom. I also had the fry tank by a window and believe that it got too hot in there during the day. The fish have spawned again and I'm leaving the parent fish to give it a go to try and care for the young again. Hopefully they can preserve a few better than I did. Darn - I'm still determined.

I WILL use an airstone as well and monitor the fry tank better - if I get fry this time.

I simply want to bring up a school of them this time. Will keep on trying.

I've had bad luck trying to raise fry myself, so I always try and let the parents do it. It may take 4 or 5 spawns for them to get it right, but it's a lot easier that way. They will feed the babies and protect them, all you really have to do is feed the adults and they will do the rest.
