This is more of a curiosity thread than anything else but i would interested in any storys/info/tips of any rare or unusual fish anyone has bred whatever they be?

What is the most unusual/rare fish you have bred or just fish you have bred before?
Unfortunatly i havn't bred anything rare or unusual, just guppys, mollys, platys and albino corys but i would like to to try somthing more unusual when i get a bigger place so i would be interested in any info on anything.

I haven't bred any yet, but I am in the process of setting up to breed a couple of species of killifish (A. gardneri 'Lokoja' and N. guentheri) and a species of pseudomugil rainbow fish (P. gertrudae). I got into killis and pseudomugil sp. rainbows because they are something different. I'm also going to try my hand at a couple of wild variety betta species (that is, after I manage to actually obtain some pairs).

I am a Killifish nut and breeding these jewels of the tropical fish world has always presented its problems. but Africian Annuals such as Nothobranchius have always floated my boat.

Killifish sound interesting- they are such a lovely group of fish
I was considering trying my hand at breeding some of the more rarer types of bettas myself at some point although i havn't settled on what type yet.

The rarer types of bettas?
Good luck in finding any in the UK!
I've still never seen anything but bog-standard veiltail splendens in any fish store anywhere, ever!

I'd like to try my hand at Dwarf Puffers, but to be frank, I don't think I could ever let them go once I had the babies.

I had the same problem with gerbils when I used to breed them years ago, I hated to think of them going to less-than-loving homes.

I've seen doubletail bettas at my lfs from time to time but im not a big fan of the doubletails and they never seem to be particually good quality at my lfs; i think breeding good quality or unusual colored bettas is probably one of the most important things as you get far too many VT's/veiltails now days, particually red ones too.

Tanganyikan shell-dweller cichlids such as n. multifasciatus are very interesting and great fun. They aren't realy that rare but they can be hard to get and they are deffinately 'unusual' behaviour-wise.

My experiences with killies are realy quite limmited but I bred some amercan-flag fish a while ago which were quite easy but it took me forever to get hold of a few and find any information on breeding and raising fry.

Other than that, I've bred several species of gourami and related fish as well as some of the more common cyprinids, livebearers etc.

A lot of it depends on the tanks and resources available to you and, of course, on what you like personaly. I love gouramies, ctenopomas and other labyrinth fish so those are the fish I usualy concentrate most on. I have plans to breed badis as soon as I can set up a tank inexpensively... They are quite closely related to gouramies and, as I have gathered, behave a bit like cichlids as well. Those are unusual fish and quite rare too.

Why don't you try joining the Anabantoid Association of Great Britain. Your sure to gleen much information and fish contacts which will far outweigh the membership fee.

Thanks for the info but i probably won't be joining the association until i actually get my hands on some bettas again. Right now its just a matter of planning ahead and collecting info.
Thanks for all the info everybody has given me so far, keep it coming if you have any more  thanks :) !

Once I've sorted out room etc. I'm going to have a go at breeding my cories. Hopefully they are all C. Undulatus (a rareish species), I'm pretty sure I've got two males, but the rest are either females or C. Aeneus. Although I'm hopefully getting Aeneus today, (unless they sell me another rare species that have been labelled as bronze  ) so I should be able to tell. I'd like to give killies a go, preferably A. Australe, but nowhere around does killies :(.

Ive bred purple striped gudgeons (Morgurnda adspersa) which are a rarer cousin of the purple spot gudgeon (Morgurnda morgurnda) and although they are not rare but certainly unusual to what most people breed i have also bred Channa gachua which are a dwarf snakehead species.
