Hello!

I was just wondering if you guys could help me...

I would like to breed this swordtail below!

But i would like to breed a line of fish that has the same tail type as her, now would i have to find a male like this type of one that has maybe a lyretail?

or if anyone has any other combinations then feel free or if someone can suggest a better male that would be great =]

Thanks in advance!

Black swords are referred to as "Berlin Blacks"
Nice fish too and clearly has the lyretail gene.

If you dont have another male Berlin to breed back to then it's going to be hard to keep the line going.
Breeding her with a lyretail male will be impossible though as males have a extended gonopodium and this makes them unable to breed.
You have to breed her with a normal male thats hopefully carrying the gene.

If you dont you will not get any lyretail gene's to show until the second generation.

Thanks a lot!

I understand now, I'd reall like to carry on the line so I would be looking for a berlin black male?

Does it mater if it is lyretail or just a normal common sword?

if you get a black male your then get all black fry (well 90% black)
But in the 1st gen no lyretail's.

From 2nd generation though you should get 50% lyretails if they good gene's.

try holding her on her own fro 6 weeks to see if she has any fry in her. and then see that you get.
If you get fry then cross back a son to her to keep the black and the lyretail strong. dont use any poor looking fish though as this can breed poor genes into the line that may show in later generation's

Brilliant! thanks a lot

I'm really looking forward to doing this!

Ps I don't think she is pregnant as I'm sure she would be showing by now I've had her for around a month, I'm pretty sure that is the case anyways!

if it's been a month and she's that thin then no she's not. you need to locate a Berlin black from somewhere.

Ask in shop's as they are on the lists now and then.

yes I will

I'll have a look around my regular LFS's tomorrow, I'm pretty sue a few can order some on for my so I should be okay!
