i have my pair, and the tank is set up.. the male is in there now.. just wondering if anyone has done it before and if so how did it go? anything different i should expect from breeding reg bettas ?

edit: been looking online.. 1 site says theyre mouthbrooders, while another site says theyre bubblenesters... when i put the 2 side by side neither of them flare at each other :S

hope your tank has some "flow" to it ;)

Occurs in small fast flowing forest streams. Inhabits overhanging bank vegetation, submerged leaf litter and exposed roots of bank vegetation.

Reproduction: Mouthbrooder. Spawns in a depression on the substrate. Male broods the eggs in his mouth until hatching. Produces a minimum of 100 eggs.

General notes: "[Writing about the synonym Betta brederi Myers, 1935] A length of six inches is not uncommon. The color is typical too: dark green spangles over brown…The female frequently shows a strong striped pattern (horizontal), especially at spawning time…the dorsal fin tends to be pointed in both sexes, but that of the male has been described as "spear-like" and may be used as a sexing distinction. The male's anal fin is more pointed…with extended fin rays at the point. His tail too, comes more to a point than the female's…He may brood up to 40 eggs, and that is a mouthful…The eggs supposedly hatch in about three days. Then, he broods the fry in his mouth for another 14 days."
"Betta pugnax is another mouthbrooder. Dr. William Innes in Exotic Aquarium Fishes, calls b. brederi a form of [B.] pugnax, but here is the description from Sterba, 'Sober gray-blue to fine red-brown…Fins yellowish with rows of brown spots…occasionally very attractively colored…strikingly contrasted red-brown colour over the underside of the head and the belly…fins bright red.'"

bkk you are like a textbook :D

im starting to wonder if they even are pugnax.. they look like the pics of some, but not like others.. i think for now i will release the male into the tank and take some pics and see if anyone knows..

i was originally using a aquaclea mini for tanks up to 10g but the flow was extreme, so i got an elite mini for tanks up to 3g, and it is still pretty powerfull..

im gonna go take pics now

pugnax has a LARGE head in comparison to the rest of the body.
does yours?

yea it looks big enough to stretch and hold eggs.. lemme upload the pics now

here are the pics of the male and 1 of the tank

your tank looks pretty good nibbles, r those real plants? your fish looks like a female, is that just how those kinda bettas r?

the plants are fake, but the moss isnt... they both look almost exactly the same.. the only noticeable difference is a ''egg spot'' but its not as easy to see on them as they are kinda white, but the female is very similar

pugnax inhabits flowing waters in borneo, sumatra, vietnam, cambodia, and thailand.
they have a large head, 28 to 40% of the body length from tip of snout to the base of tail fin.
natural habitat varies considerably, but is usually clear, sluggish and rapidly flowing, unstained, cool, neutral to slightly alkaline ph (7.1-7.5).
this peaceful fish readily spawns in large, well planted tanks with high quality, cool (70 degrees f to 75 degrees f) water.
pugnax should be conditioned seperately for 2 weeks on live food in small quarters and then placed together in a 10 or 20 gallon covered spawning tank with dense vegetation.
breeding occurs in the open or in midwater. spawning is initiated by the female, and the standard betta embrace occurs with the female wrapped at a right angle within the arched body of the male. the eggs do not fall freely as in bubblenesting bettas, but are gathered or at least slowed in their descent by the curved anal fin of the male, which acts like a cup. then, as the large white eggs fall from the males anal fin, the female recovers, rushes down to intercept the falling eggs, and gathers them in her mouth. as the recovering male joins her, she spits the eggs towards him, and he gathers them for subsequent brooding. brooding males should be isolated until the large fry are released 7 to 12 days later. after release, the male should be placed back in the communal tank. the fry typically take to newly hatched live brine shrimp as a first food, so infusoria culture is not necessary. clutches range from 20 to 100, depending on the size, and experience of the adults.
