Hi folks, I have a breeding pair of kribs in my community tank, I have set aside two coconut caves for them and there is also another cave for them. everything is fine in regards to tempers of the fish and things but the pleco I have keeps going in and destroying their nest he has done it twice to my knowledge already.

So I turned the coconut cave (the one they use) right up to the glass so they could get in the opening but not the plec, it turns out he just burrows into it and forces the cave away to get in.

So do you experts have any ideas to stop the plec getting the nest..... any ideas most welcome

cheers guys

Uhhh yea...

as long as you have pleco snacks in the form of nice squishy protien filled eggs he's going to keep getting in there.

wanna solve it?

take the dang pleco out! give him a woman to occupy his ....talents :hey: and a pad of his own!

you don't really need to take the pleco out though, you could just get a cocnut cave with a smaller entrance hole?

how big is the pleco and how big is are the kirbs?

i had the same problem once but it was a group of baby clowns doing the eating of the krib eggs, so i got them a cave with a smaller hole and faced the cave into the corner of the tank and as the kribs grew faster than the clown loaches they had size on their side.

i would of probably had the same problem if my 14 inch sailfin plec could fit through the little hole lol.

Hiya the plecos is about 5-6 inches big, the kribs are half the size, I turned the cocnut cave around and stuck a clay pipe over the entrance and obscured it with plants, he hasn't found it yet but there is pleco poop all over the sand where the cave is. so he has been at it...but I dont think he has got in, cause nothing has been moved. I'll just have to keep trying different positions. me thinks. :good:

if you could get the hole down to an inch or an inch and a half the pleco probably wouldn't be able to get in and the kribs would but depends on the fish width(the pleco)

anyway good luck

I know this may be a little drastic but that is a big pleco. I would suggest getting a smaller one. I have kribs and a small pleco and things seem to be fine. I think alot of people's experiences with fish, however, are based on what has happened in their tanks with their fish. Fish have personalities of their own and you may have a serial pleco on your hands. The idea of a smaller hole does make sense though.

I just finished re-reading what I wrote and can see that I was no help at all. :S

ha ha cheers grotto for your consideration, the plec has actually been kept out of the nest now for 3-4 days so it seems to be working. hopefully he will get bored trying and naff off to the other side of the tank. :good:

I've just noticed two kribs I've recently aquired have made a cave underneath an ornament (entrance is through the top of the ornament) and a male and female have been taking turns dissapearing inside. These are my first Cichlids so I've been doing a bit of homework, I was under the impression the male will guard the nest? I have three bristlenose cats but one is too big to get inside and the other two are tiny, the kribs wouldn't have any trouble putting them in their place?
Sorry for the hijack!!

Its cool man no hi jack, its good to hear other situations. My kriobs are guarding two nests at the moment so hopefully a=evrything works out.

good luck with your kribs man. :good:
