I may be aquiring a breeding pair of Jack Dempsey's from a friend of a friend of mine and would like any advice on how i should go about setting up the tank for breeding these fish. i have owned JD's before, just never a breeding pair and any advice is welcome.

basically get yourself a 55 gallon tank, put some cave either flower pots or rocks. and some flat slate or other surface for the female to lay her eggs on. I would place a couple of them reltivly close to the caves.

i plan on using either a 35g long or a 45 gallon to breed the pair in.

the 45 MIGHT be alright but I would just make sure to have a divider on hand. the move might throw them off a bit and daddy might decide that he doesn't like his bride any more.

ok, i will be sure to get a divider the next time im out. i probably wont be picking them up untill saturday so i have a bit of time.

this breeding pair may no longer be a breeding pair once you change thier enviornment

That won't last long, after the two fish settle back in they will start spawning again. After wer34 aquires these fish they will probably be skittish for a short period of time, but will settle in and begin to breed soon.

well i tried them in the 42" 45g tank and the male geave the female a little bit of a beating so i moved them to the 4' 55 gallon tank and gave them about 5 more big caves for them to breed and hide in.
