I'm new to breeding platies. I have a very fat female who looks like she is ready to go. Ive moved her to the breeding net because i am not here to watch when she begins to have babies. i was wondering what the max amount of time she can be in there is. Ive heard of people saying being in the net stresses her out and i dont want her to abort her pregnancy.

It's possibly she could even die from being in the breeding net, mine did.. What I would do and this is my opinion I think it'd be best for the female to be left in the main tank and have some plants for the babies to hide in platie fry are excellent hiders.

i have some fake plants but i dont think they are enough for the fry to hide in. That in for some reason my red tailed shark absolutley hates this platie. He chases the others a bit but none near as much as this particular one. It must be her color. Im afraid since she is so fat she wont be able to get away from him.

If your realy serious about breeding and keeping any fry, you have to get another tank. Even just a 5g will do.

Breeding trap/nets KILL, I hate them completely, and utterly, I even hate seeing them in shops. Not only do they kill fish, when the fry is raised in them they get stunted and very unhealthy.

i actually got another ten gallon yesterday with fish in it. its in such bad shape at teh moment that i dont want to put her in there. The previous owner had never cleaned it and their is so much dirt in the bottom. it is also bare. i guess ill give it a good clean tommorrow and add the platy hopefully she will be alright till then.

Well i don't know about you guys and your experiences with breeding nets that much but i have never had a pregnant fish die in a breeding net ever, i have bred fish many times.
Its how you go about that i think is important; you don't want to have a fish any bigger than a molly and you don't want to have her in there more than a week. You have to place it so it is not directly under the tank lights and you want too add some plant pieces and shade for the fish. It is also good you place the net where there is decent flow from the filter in the tank to ensure a good oxygen supply. If the mother fish hasn't given birth after 4days, let her swim around in the main tank for a day to let her stretch her fins and avoid becomming stessed. If you do all this you can't realy go wrong.
I would go for the breeding net option in this scenario; if you keep her in the tank with other fish harrassing her she is twice more likely to die from stress; the fry are twice as more likely to get eaten by other fish than her too. Also, although it would be good to get a breeding tank/fry tank, you won't be able to get cycled in time if she is going to give birth anytime and it won't be a good enviroment for the fry; she may abort them if the tank isn't cycled properly.

breeding nets and boxes are an extreamly bad idea, it stresses out the mother to be and ur fry will not grow in there, infact they will probably die. u should set up a 10g for breeding only and put the mother in there with ome weeds. u could even use a 5g if u wanted, u just have to do water changes more often.

welp she had 10 babies this morning when i woke up. a few are swimming some are hiding. the swimming ones seem to be the healthiest. i will continue feeding a few times a day and trying to help them along. thanks for your input everyone. im just glad she had them before i put her back in teh tank.
