I hope you floted them for 45 minutes or so ..... The female is most likely pregnant already and the pregnancy itself can lest from 4 weeks to 3 wonths .... You need to release the into the tank immediately having a fish in the breeding box will most likely kill them due to stress ... if you release them they will breed automatically no doubt about it get 2 more females atleast ...... post this in the live bearer section next time !!!

Yeah you definately need more females or the male will constantly harrass the female and she'll be so stressed out she'll probably abort any fry before they're born.

I'd get at least 2 more females if I were you.

I dont think there's anything specific you can do to encourage breeding of livebearers. By all acounts they wont need much persuading anyway!

Just make sure you have plenty of hiding places for the fry or better still, a fry net so that they wont be eaten by your other fish.

thanks for the help guys, ill make a trip to the lfs soon and get a couple more females. ill let you guys know if anything happens

Well platys breed pretty fast, so it wouldn't take long for her to get pregnant. But for her to give birth, it should be roughly 3-4 weeks.

and you can get from 5-50 fry in the bunch you get.
I recoment that when you do get the fry get either:
1.First bites from Hikari
2.Liqui fry for livebearers.

Also when you start to see a black spot on the females backend then you must put her in your breeding net.
The black spot is the fry`s eyes in the womb of the fish.
This way the Fry does not get eaten by other fish.
When you do see fry in the breeding net take out the femle THEN dont wait and say "oh in a bit" as the fry will get eaten by the female.
Feed a small amout of food you have for them and in a few weeks they should grow.
Also relese the fry about 3 weeks after they are born.

Hope this helps you out.
