I have a 15 gallon and two 10 gallon tanks. Each tank has 4 guppies (1m, 3fm).

I have always just let them have their babies and me not pay attention to them. Just fed them their bloodworms, and did constant 5-10% daily water changes once I saw their gravid spots.

My question is this. When my females have their gravid spots does this mean they are fertile and the male is no longer needed in the tank?

I also need to know the sex of this guppy. it is huge and looks just like a female. But no gravid spot. And I noticed the tail is a quite larger than my other females.

Never kept female guppys, yes she is pregnant if she is showing a gravid spot, the male can be taken out, usually a female has a triangle fin where a male dosn't, hope this makes sense to you.

i think that the gupy on the pic is a male as it looks to have a gonadtropium (?SP?).(i think i got the word but basically male 'bits'!!!)

Very pretty fishy!

Do you mean are they pregnant when they have a gravid spot?

Guppy fry can develop their gravid spots at just a couple of weeks old, but I doubt that they can get pregnant at this age.

I've noticed that the more melanin a guppy fry has, the darker the gravid spot.

For example I've got a few guppy fry with black markings and their gravid spot has always been black, while I've got another blonde guppy fry whose gravid spot is more pink. Hopefully neither of these are pregnany yet at just 2 months old :S

200% sure thats a male, had one just like him. His gonopodium(male sexual organ) sticks out like a sore thumb. Just wondering, did you buy him from Walmart?.
Most female guppies dont have strong colouration on their body, just on their tails. Thats how I find out sexes early in age is by colour on the body. ;)
Do you not have filters in their tanks and thats why you're doing so many water changes? With only 4 gups per tank, you're not over stocked or anything.

No. They're filtered. I just read it helps them to get to spawning.

No, I got this little guy at a place I found called "Fin Den"

From what I found he is called a red fire guppy.

So I guess I have 2 males and 2 females in that tank.

But my question was once the females have their gravid spot, are they fertile so I can take the male out or how do I tell if the female is fertile.

Well, since I have another Male, I'll go get more females.

I want alot of guppies to give to my little cousins with tanks for Christmas. I already got the ok with my aunts and other family members since that is what they wanted. I guess I'm playing santa this year :). They are just in love with my fish.
