Breeding Krib

[fish are friends....]

• I Have had a pair of Krib for about 6 months. They are now full grown but still havn't spawned.
• Both have done a lot of body shaking and showing off to each other.
• In my tank I have plants, and a choice of cave.. including flower pots and bog wood.
• I also have 6 ditherfish (neon rainbows)
• Water condition was described as perfect and temp is 80F

Is there anything more i can do, or just be patient?

if you have had them for that long and they haven't bred they are either wild caught or the same sex. If they are wild caught try lowering the pH and hardness and see if that helps. You can also raise the temperature to about 28C.
Male Kribs get bigger (about 4 inches) than females and have a pointed tail. Females have a rounded tail and only get to about half the size of a male.

I'm 100% sure they are male and female.
I have recently moved them from a smaller tank with a couple of other cichlids.
They have been in the new tank for about 3 weeks, so could they just need some more time
Been feeding them on bloodwork and flakes.
I will try raising the temp, will this effect the other fish in the tank?

The other cichlids might have been bullying them and that prevented them from breeding. If they are in their own tank now they should produce fry within a few weeks.
Feed them a variety of food including prawn, fish, squid, frozen bloodworms, brineshrimp & daphnia. Feed them 2-3 times per day and do regular water changes to keep the water nice and clean. Raw prawn/shrimp will bring most fish into breeding condition quite quickly. Just remove the shell and chop into small bite size pieces. Then feed the fish as much as they can eat. Remove any leftovers after feeding.
Don't feed the fish too much if they are in a new tank with a new filter. Wait until it has finished cycling before feeding the fish more.

A rather large water chagne and adding very cold water and then rasing the temp can cause them to breed.

hi just a thought but there are quite afew different strains of pelvicachromis are you sure both are true kribensis as this can and has happened .fish such as tienatus and subocelaris often get confused with pulcher especially the females and if this is the case they will show off to one another but wont breed do you have pictures

That isnt true, they will most definatley breed. Im not sure aobut Taeniatus getting confused with Pulcher. How do you confuse this:

Maybe its just me, but no one on Gods green earth could do that.

taenatus females have been confused your years with pulcher females in the uk by inexperianced shopkeepers and fishkeepers alike

I had a flower pot for mine and they never showed any intrest in it, I then got them a coconut shell half and they spawned in that, several times actually.....Till I was over run by them!!!! LOL

I have broken one of the flower pots in half and the other i gave it a bash with a hammer so its got a big whole in it.. they look more natural now and have shown a bit more interest.

I will post pictures of both the fish and their tank and see what you thing.
temp is at 26.5'C now

mine bred between 2 stones, digging a hole in the substrate, and now they discovered the left over hole from the undergravel filter (I was too lazy to get it out as I installed the canister, so I just removed the airstone and the plastic tube) and have turned that into their permanent breeding place.

I did a water change today and put some cold water in to drop the temp a bit, i will do another one either tonight or tomorrow morning and put some warm in and see if that triggers them off!

Anyone else got some more advice?

Just feed them good qaulity food and wait.
