Breeding in a 10 gal

Yes you sure can ive been breeding mollies and only one batch so far, and shes about to go again in the next day or two, they work great but it isnt very good lookin in the tank ive been thinkin of getting another tank but my pleco eats the acces food off of the bottom.

The breeder traps aren't a very good idea for keeping the pregnant fish in, they get stressed out and either abort or possibly die. Its very stressful, like trying to live in a closet. Its much better for the fish to give birth in the tank without the trap. If you want to keep the fry in the trap until they get larger thats a good idea. I have done that myself but the breeder trap can get messy with all the feedings the fry need.

like the others said, it is possible. but i think it is always a good idea to have another tank to house the fry in, mainly because they breed very fast and a ten gal will get overloaded with fry and a short time.

I have 2 10 gallons with only guppies. I don't keep the female in the trap, but I keep my eye on her as she gets kind of sqaure shaped in the belly. When she looks squarish, I scan the tank very carefully each day a few times.

Once the babies are born I catch as many as I can in a net and put them in the trap. They need lots of food, so you have to keep the bottom of the breeding net clean, but it isn't hard.

They grow fast, so they don't have to stay in there very long. Your babies need to be big enough not to get swallowed...as time goes on I have found that they need less time than I thought before you can put them in the tank free. I haven't lost many yet doing things this way. Only about 4 out of 45?

Anyway, if you save them all, you soon realize that you best have a zillion tanks to house the babies you see each month!

Once I let the babies out, I keep the adults well fed for a bit so they aren't as tireless chasing the babes.

I have a 10g full of java moss and some grown up platies. I never remove them and let them breed as much as they need. Since java moss occupies over half of the tank in volume, my guess is that large % of the fries survive and even provides food for the really small ones. I catch the fries at around 2 weeks old and tranfer them to a grow out tank.

So far, it seems to be working well, without stressing out any fishes.
