hi everyone my name is naomi and i have just a quick question. I have a female guppy, i have had no males in the tank for aprox 1-2 months, she has just given birth. I do have another baby guppy who is about a quarter to a third fully grown. I am not sure if it is a male or female, but i am guessing male as it has got quite a bit of colour on its body. How did my fish have babies??? they do need males don't they??? or is it possible that the small baby guppy has done the trick???

hi naomi

guppies have a strange habit of storing sperm so the chances she was pregnant when you got her is strong and she is likely to drop more fry over the next few months. it is know for male guppies to father young at a young age but the first part of this response is more likely

Hi and welcome to the forum :) !
Female guppys can store sperm in them so if they've mated with a male in the past before, they can still give birth numerous times even in the absence of a male in the future. Male and female guppys are told apart by their anal fins- males have a tube shaped anal fin while females anal fins are fan shaped, see pics for more info;
