Hi
Following on from temperatures and PH, and whether it affects the sex of the fry.

I was talking to a guy at Maidenhead aquatics. We were talking about tail types, breeding etc... He wondered whether there was a link between what we feed our bettas and what sex fry we get??? Dunno, was my reply, LOL, very proffesional answer i know. But i thought, well most of the people that breed i know, condition on betta pro and bloodworm? He said that he had seen a documentary about birds, i know they're not fish but, they had done some tests on different pairs. Some allowed to feed normally and some only fed on non-fatty, lower protein foods. They concluded that the pairs who were fed the restricted food produced a higher percentage of females.

Hmmmmm,??? I wonder if this would transfer to fish? Will try in with the spawn after next as we are already conditioning the next pair.

Going to be interesting though.

interesting!!!...... i know that microworms cause extended ventral and anals in females if fed these continuously from hatching until they go onto dry food, this is why i dont use them anymore, as to whether the food types during conditioning determines sex is not really to far fetched as everything is possible to some degree and attempting this to see what happens using different foods is a good idea, what foods are you gunna be using? i could set up another pair for conditioning and stick to another food. would ofcourse we would both need to maintain the same pH and temps so that the only conclusion could be food i suppose, any good reason to get more fry

I conditioned my parent bettas on bloodworm, brine shrimp and peas. I shall have to report and tell you guys what the ratio of my current batch of fry turns out to be, as I did find that I somehow killed my microworm culture and so used liqufry for 3 days and then straight onto baby brine shrimp, and as far as numbers go for survivers, I have 14 live fry out of 16 stolen eggs. Oh and my temp is between 80-82 and ph is 8.

ok my first spawn turned out many more females then males, 5 males total and 14 females water temp 84 for the first week from parents conditiong then down to 82 at one week hatched till batching out to jars. ph 7.5 mom and dad conditioned on bloodworms and betta pellets

second spawn much faster then the first, only needed time to condition on bloodworms for parents. water temp 82 the whole time ph 7.5
and have 20 big swimmers i can count,, sure there are many more but the buggers move too fast! will know a exact count when i jar them out, probally another 6 weeks?
