I am thinking about starting to breed some fish.... as of now, i think my "black skirt tetra" is pregnant, because she keeps getting fatter every day, and i was wondering if anyone here knew of any websites or articles or "howto's" about breeding fish?

I want to learn about livebearers, and egg layers, because i want to breed them both.

i can help with livebearers... take 1 male and 1 female.... get them wet... wait a week or so.... hey presto babies!! :good: ;)

I seriously think google is your best bet for stuff like this, breeding requirements can be very species specific so google breeding and the name of the fish your interested in.

I've breed many fish over the years, and i love livebearers and not just the common types, i have had over 200 species of livebeares and breed the majority of them.

With black skirt's their not that easy, to breed and very difficualt to rear the fry.

You idearly need a "Breeding tank", keeping other fish in there will only cause problems

You need soft water, to start collecting rain water or useless your lucky to live in a soft water area.
Do good water changes every week, and check the qualitys to make sure their all good.

Once you want to rearly breed them u need plenty of small live food, vinager ell's, mirco worms, grindel worm, brine shrimp eggs, and daphina.

Fit the breeding tank with marbles covering the bottom to stop the parents from eating the eggs spawning mops as they may want to place the eggs off the bottom but they are classed as egg scatterers.

Large water changes can be a good trigger to breeding. but this is not always the case, it's just luck sometimes.

Good luck though.

Hmm i wouldn't really keep just one female per male, male livebearers are often so over-sexed they often more or less constantly harrass the females which is very stressful for them so its better to have around at least 2-3females or more per male (unless its swordtails, in which case you shouldn't have more than one male per tank) to help spread his efforts amoungst more females so no one female gets harrassed too much :good: .

Ok, thanks for all the info, but my main question was if you knew of any articles, or websites that explain this stuff a little better?

nooo i didn't mean you should keep them like that, just specifically for breeding you just need to make sure you have both males and females and some water :rolleyes:

For common livebearers check out the pinned artciles in the Livebearer section, they have loads of info on breeding and keeping livebearers;

Once you have chosen a more specific fish to breed, a lot more people will be able to help you out :good: . The main thing is that if you are going to seriously breed fish, i would advise having a separate cycled fry or breeding tank of at least 10gallons :nod: .

Sandfor & Bailey, The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Aquarium Fish has some good articles on the subject, and nice pics too.

I think there was an article in Practical Fishkeeping magazine last year too- I'll see if I can find it.

Other than that, the suggestion to google is a good one; I've found lots of good and up-to-date articles that way. I usually type in name of the species and the word "breeding". I find the internet is the best place for finding blow-by-blow accounts of people's actual experiences.

The Practical fishkeeping site also has many articles on breeding a wide variety of fish including breeding some of the more difficult and unusual fish to breed- you need to become a member of their site to view or use a fair amount of their things, but its free and easy and i totally recommend it as the site has a large wealth of up to date information and advice on many aspects of fishkeeping, whether you do tropical, coldwater, marine, brackish, freshwater, sub-tropical etc etc;

They also have a recent article on breeding Black neon tetras if you are interested in breeding a small egg layer fish;

Well why make people look at other sites, simply ask here and there are people how may of breed the fish and be willing to post on what to do, thats why i answer so many questions on livebeares, breeding and ID'ing fish.

Helter.
