Hiding behind the aqautic plants.
Well this is the story...

I went out and bought male and female bettas. I had tried breeding before, but it didn't work with both of the couples, and even with other females, I never seemed to get it right... (although I did research and follow all the rules) The females never seemed to be in the mood for it.

So I decided I would try again.. I got a 5.5 gall. And loaded it with floating plants, and a heater, as well as a styrofoam half cup.

The first introduction I had all the best results. He took a day or two to build his nest. And the female was all barred up. So after a couple of days, I realeased her into the tank. He never nipped except once, when he just couldn't help himself. He chased. But he was very gentle, and tryed his best to get her interest. She was interested, but was pretending not to be.

As he realized that she wasn't as interested as he thought... He let his nest scatter, and began ignoring her. But they both very much enjoy each others company. It has been almost a week that they have been together with no spawning. Though they are co-existing peacefully.

She is still barred, and once or twiced she has flared at him, and he flared back and chased her, but nothing more. She seems to be wanting to be courageous so she can swim up and spawn, but the farthest she has gotten was displaying and flaring, and when he flared back, she raced away. (obviously very shy)

Help. Is this normal??

yea, do you have a filter on it? if so then turn it off.

you really need to condition both male and female for atleast 1 and 1/2 weeks before spawning. i do 2 weeks.

split them up for a few days, out of sight form each other preferabley, and feed them up, lots of live/frozen foods. after a few days, reintroduce her in the vase/devider and leave them to get reaquainted for a day or two, hopefuly the male will build up a new nest and then let them in together for another try. a few days of no contact with each other always seems to spur on courtship in my experiance.

Okay great!! And I conditioned them on Frozen BS (brine Shrimp) And their regular pellets, and other veggie dry flakes.

Just wondering... Could I possibly feed them Sea-monkeys?? I am loaded with those... (sea monkeys are a type of pre-historic brine shrimp) They are alive at the moment. And they just keep re-producing... And I was hoping I could feed them to the fish?? One of my female guppies seems to enjoy them. (for info look on google/ sea monkeys)

Yes, you can feed them baby brine shrimp lol also called sea monkey or artemia Napaulii. They are high in protein and fat so are good for condtioning along with other love foods.
