breeding chart for cockatoos

I think that MH meant target fish, which are fish intentionally put into a tank to keep a pair of cichlids (Just an example) from tearing each other apart. Dithers are used to get timid fish feeling comfortable enough to swim around instead of hiding.

If your pair is getting along well, don't bother with targets, because adding more fish into a breeding tank will ultimately end in less (or none) of the fry reaching maturity ;)

Dither fish may also be used to make breeding fish act more protective , crossing a line into being target fish , so to say , target are used to displace aggression , so in the case of breeding apistos , it's a little of both , if I had less fish in my tank , mine would have raised some fry .

Give them many places to hide , not too many tankmates I think a few is ok , I think some members here have raised up fry in community tanks .

Target fish are any fish that can be used to divert the anger a pair of fish has towards eachother to the target. Target fish can be tetras, danios, catfish, they can be anything really.

A Target fish is not a species of fish , it's a term to describe what dwarfs has mentioned in the above post .

Pencilfish are peaceful, calm, have very small mouths and don't generally eat eggs or fry, which is why you'd consider them in a community with apistos as the "stars" of the tank. They're also kinda cool. They also live in the same waters as apistos in the wild. They're also a very underappreciated fish.

For what it's worth... a quote from a breeder on another (dwarf cichlid specific) forum, talking about their apisto breeding tank dithers: "I've found pencilfish to be the safest. I've had pencilfish feeding in a fenzy on BBS right along side tiny fry without touch even one by mistake. They were so safe that the apisto parents tolerated the pencilfish being close to their fry."

*climbs off soapbox*

whta pencil fish look like? dont they have a long nose or r those neddle nose?could some 1 get me a picture?

why not put corries with them? They can eat other samll fish, and as long as they are not a big variety they do not sause much of a disturbance.

Oh and about males, I had a divider, but the tiny babies always used to get through, Instead of eating them, he would: look at them slightly confused, make a small pit in the gravel and pick them up with his mouth and put them there lol ^^ though he didn't really let them out much  . But I dunno he may have been one-of-a-kind

is there a certain kind of pencil to get or any will do dont want to loose fry :D

It is "dwarf cichlid specific" ........we don't really have that here ;)
