Hi

I have been keeping fish for just a year now.
Originally I got 6 juvenile angels in my community tank. But as expected and as they matured I had to re-home most of them. I currently have a pair left in my community tank. A black marble female and a koi male. They have laid numerous sets of eggs on my inlet pipe. They are getting better at keeping them and the eggs last e few days before they eat them. Its a busy tank with 12 rainbows, cardinals, rummy nose tetras, panda corys, and ottos.

I have a 190 litre tank now empty and ready and am thinking of removing the next hatching on the outlet pipe and place it in the empty tank.

Any advice on if its okay to hatch the eggs of a marble and a koi would be helpful.

If so advice on what substrate and plants etc.

Also some ideas as to how long they take to hatch, what food to feed them and how long they take to grow. Another concern is what to do with them once they are ready to go.

Thanks for reading, any advice will be appreciated.

I did this topic some time ago to address exactly what you are wondering. As far as hatching that tank may be a bit big, but I have heard of people hatching spawns in 20 gallon tanks without a problem.

Hatching the eggs of a marble x koi is no problem, not knowing the exact lineage behind each individual it is impossible to determine the exact ratio of what to expect out of the spawn, for the most part it would probably be marbles as koi are actually gold marble blushers. As stated this is dependent more on the genetics behind the marble, you may see a few golds or silvers, perhaps a black.

When breeding I've always dealt with bare bottom tanks with no plants. Substrate holds more debris than you could believe, plants are not needed, it's an elimination of possible problems.

Hatching is dependent to some extent on temperature, at 80-82F they should be swimming in 6-7 days. Look into setting up a baby brine shrimp hatchery, this is the only food most anyone has had consistent success with when breeding angels. You can expect many to be hitting dime body size in 8 weeks with proper conditions.

Best bet is to look at independent shops who will buy them once they are sellable size. Another outlet is local club swaps & auctions.
