Hi
I have an old tank I am going to break up, which is too heavy for me to lift off the cabinet and take to the dump. What is the best way to break it up without having glass splinters going everywhere? (aqua one regency 10mm thick glass)
Regards
Stephen

The only thing U can suggest is scraping down the silicone with a safety blade and dismantling it piece by piece. I wouldn’t try smashing it.

Get heavy duty tape the wide stuff, cover the glass with it so when you break it the glass mostly stays glued to the tape. You can tape both inside and outside of the glass. Make sure you cover the glass complently.

What's the condition of the tank and what else are you chucking out? Might find a member to take it away for you ;)

I'm actually quite tempted but not sure I could sneak one that size in without SWMBO noticing.

It is an Aqua one regency tank and cabinet (220 litres) glass is 100mm. I have had it approx. 10 years

Stand up for yourself WIMPY (Hide it in the garage and sneak it in after lights out!)
Hmm...I'm looking for a sump for my 110g, but geography rules this out!

I remember as a kid, my dad had a 125 gallon tank that was beyond repair.

He had the same idea as you......needless to say, it went out in pieces..... about a million of them.

Maybe you could ease it off the stand and then totally cover it with an old tarp or bedsheet. Put on heavy gloves and a jacket and use a heavy hammer to break it up. If to heavy too pick up pieces wrapped in the sheet, take out the larger pieces to lower the weight, and then throw out the sheet and the tank in the trash.

the trouble is when we first got it. my wife and I struggled to lift it up and over the plinth on the cabinet

If taking it off the stand yourself:
Taking it off the stand is easier than putting it on the stand. Just slide the tank slowly off the side of the stand as you lower the side of the tank to the ground. Then grab the top of the side of the tank and finish lowering the tank to the ground.

you need to lift it up to get it over the plinth & too heavy for my wife & I who are too feeble.
