I started keeping fish about 6 months ago and as usual i started with guppies. Due to unforseen circumstances, like being eaten and having white spot my 14 original guppies never really stood a chance. Slowly i integrated more agressive fish and each time i hoped the guppies would survive, but alas, they slowly declined in numbers. However, out of all my guppies one little orange fella always stood out, he was always fighting for his food with the loachs, siamese fighters, barbs, mollies, platys and he was always in pristine condition. Even today my wife rang me to say that he was fighting over a pellet with a Gourami 5 times as big as him...Could he be a rogue Guppy, or just a brave little soul. Answers on a postcard!

why are you putting guppies with barbs etc on purpose? they will just die....

makes no sense.

1. as they are considered hardy by some
2. this one has lasted so far and seems to give as good as he gets

or were you being ironic?

what does hardy level have anything to do with putting a fancy guppies with barbs to be nipped to death?

"as usual i started with guppies"

not sure but might have done a fish cycle. i'll admit it's not an ideal situation however not all fish act the same when placed in different tanks.

I didnt put the barbs in with the guppies on purpose, my LFS said it wouldnt be a problem...anyhoo, the brave little fella is dead now anyway...so he is in fish heaven being nipped by heavenly barbs!

sounds like a cool fella. sorry he's now departed.
I have 1 sole cardinal in my tank on his ownsome, i had 7 or so to begin with several months ago but within the first week a lost them all except the one, I did wonder how it would manage as they are a shoaling fish i believe, anyway he's been doing great and he's now huge! (for a cardinal, he's 2 1/2 to 3 cm I'd say),
he seems quite happy on his own, i have Rams, guppies, corys in the tank.
he does look odd on his own thou, and not with a shoal.
I was considering getting afew more cardinals but the shop only seem to get tiny ones in!

anyone else had experience of losing cardinals rapidly? is there some type of syndrome ? i thought i'd heard about losing neons & cardinals, are they highly sensitive to water changes?
