well i think im posting lots of silly questions but theres a saying the all great things in the world exist because of a silly question

well if theres bacteria eating and cleaning the fishes faeces well then theres typically no need to clean the filter as it kills bacteria

and can anyone explain to me how a gravel filter works?
pls

the bacteria does eat the fishy poo and what not but there are lots of bit that don`t get broken down.

washing the filter, you rince a smal part of the media out in tank water so say you have 3 sponges in your filter you only wash one then wash a diffrent one in 2 weeks or what ever, you wash it out in tank water so it dosent kill all the bacteria just washes most of the crudd off, the bacteria can multiply within hours. to replcae those lost...

an under gravel filter works by sucking the water down through the gravel thus keeping debris down in the substrate the bakteria grow on the gravel and as the water passes over them it alows them to perform there little task.
