hi bought 2 new plants today dont know what they are anyway the roots have been wrapped in wool and then a piece of metal.
should i take the metal off or should i leave it on. Will it harm my fish?

Are there a bunch of stems wrapped together? If so, then you should remove the metal and the wool. This way you can seperate the stems and plant them a little further apart. This will make sure that light gets to all the leaves, and the plant will do better.

hang on ill have a look for what its called n ill get a pic.

i just looked it up and it is called ANACHARIS
when i bought it i asked the assistant if it was easy to care for and he said all you have to do is prune it so i bought 2. :D
heres the pic.

I've never kept that plant, but if you take the metal off, then you will have 8 plants that you can spread out.

thats a pretty fast grower..i have some in the left hand side of my tank..it will send shoots off the main stem, just cut it at the bottom of the stem where it shoots off then replant the new stalk and it will grow..that plant multiplies pretty good,,

ive just taken the metal and wool off and sepparated 2 of them from the bunch.
thanx for the advice :)

Snails killed my Anacharis. I really like it, but mine all died because of the stupid snails that came in on it.

mandy ive just killed 4 snails that i found on it and looking for more, were the snails on your plant a dark black with light brown patches on it?

They were tiny snails, and I didn't look too closely at them but they did appear to be dark brown color, maybe even black.

The plant is Egeria densa, formerley known as Elodea densa/canadensis and commonly called Ancharis. Easy to grow plant. A real cosmopolitan species that occurs over much of the temperate world. In low light it gets spindly, and may break off and float free. In good light it has tight leaves and grows very fast. A good plant for beginners as it has an allelopic reaction to some algae types, (produces chemicals which inhibt algae).

I bought some more Anacharis yesterday to add to my guppy tank. I found one snail so far, I'm sure they'll be more. Damn snails.
